A quick question

How do broadcast channels calculate number of viewers??

I mean… in news they are saying that --the Grammys were seen by 26.3 million viewers, making Sunday night’s awards show the third-most watched Grammy telecast of the last 10 years…

How did they calculate 26.3million??

a company called neilsen selects households to participate in its study and place a box in their homes. it then tracks what the viewers are watching at any given time. they use statistical inference tools to verify that their pool is randomly chosen and representative of the population at large. there are only a few thousand homes but they then draw conclusions based on these results (same as how they project election winners). each rating point represents thousands of households (or something like that).

Yeah Jeeray, be careful man. They have a box in your TV too. Make sure you don't tune into channels 490 thru 499 on Dish.

I thought cable companies would know which channels their subscribers are watching? Same with Satellite. So, its not that, haan?

There is no uplink in satellite, so how can they know? They can only know which channels their customers subscribed to, or which PPVs the customers ordered (either online, phone or using the modem in the IRD). They cant know which particular channel you are watching. In easy terms, you are receiving data through satellite onto your receiver (IRD), and you are not sending any data back.

I am not sure about digital cable, but as for the old conventional analog cable, they cannot know which frequency you are locked onto, so they wouldnt know which channel you are watching. However, the new digital cable technology allows them to tap into the carrier wave one particular customer is hooked onto.

Spock, are you saying it is safe to use "the card" on Dish?
