A Question

There are some specific things that I would want in Chicago. Was wondering if anyone can help me by telling me if they are available there.

  1. Desi Parlour or eye brow threading ladies?

  2. Ecco, Clarks and Josief Siebel shoes?

  3. Desi restaurants ?

  4. some pakistani ladies community of chicago or something? where new comers to the city can go and feel a bit at home ?

  5. any pakistani related events etc that happen ?

this is it for now..

Re: A Question

all I can say that you wont miss desi touch, a lot in Chicago. When Desis in North America start missing their home country too much, there are only handful of cities they can go to to feel at home (almost). Chicago is one of them.

Re: A Question

there is DEVON Street [renamed by indians as "Deewaan [ji] street] where desi is everywhere. in chicago u will never miss pak hehe

Re: A Question

yes to all your questions…chicago has a large desi community and it has a lot to offer to all kinds of people! :k:

Re: A Question

As TLK said, you won't miss the desi touch in Chicago. Google chicago with various tags and see what comes up. Devon street's desi section is like a very very tiny scale South Hall, London. But Chicago, overall, has a lot of desis and more then that - Muslims.

1) There is a street called Devon which has so many desis and desi shops that portions of it have been officially named Quaid-e-Azam Rd and Gandhi Rd. It has everything. In fact, it is not uncommon for girls who are getting married to just do their shopping in Chicago.

2) Being extremely nitpicky. This is like those dumb questions people ask, "Do they have this this and this store in Dubai? If not, I am not moving there". Your lifestyle can't be this exclusive, can it? Clarks and Ecco are sold in the mall though.

3) Lots of desi restaurants, but most of them seem to be very poorly run and have horrible service.

4) Universities usually have a Muslim association and a Pakistani association which is full of new arrivals who want to connect with each other and take part in activities.

5) Lots of events, but I doubt any are on the same scale as Dubai. Most appear to be very mismanaged.

Re: A Question

thank you for the answers and yes about shoes I am very particular. I only wear shoes from these brand.

  1. You will find a TON of salons and parlors in CHicago...it really depends where in Chicago you are.

  2. I am not picky when it comes to party shoes because you only wear them for a couple of hours so as long as they look nice, I dont care for the brand. For everyday use, I am picky because these shoes take a lot of wear and tear and need to be comfortable. Ecco and Clarks are sold in the malls...I dont wear them though. I wear Franco Sarto...they work best for my feet.

  3. Sabri is one of my favorites.

Lots of people like Usmania...I dont.

Delhi Darbar is good food but not a sit down place at all...its a cabby joint with great food. You order your food, go in when its ready, pay and leave.

Khan BBQ is good

JK Kabob House

Tahoora and Nirala

Spinzer for chaat and snacks

  1. Again, it really depends where in Chicago you are but a masjid is a sure bet to be able to cultivate some friendships.

  2. Lots of events, usually they pop up around the two Eids and Ramadan.

When will you be here Aisha?

Re: A Question

soon bonnie! :)

Re: A Question

Khan BBQ is the best.

^ Lol Jafri. You do like Khan BBQ a lot don’t you.

Aisha you got your answers already. EVERYTHING is there in Chicago.

To answer the 4th question. We don’t have any specific women communities for new comers. We do have some community centers but those are for women who need help in other areas of life. Like some places provide free English classes or computer classes. Driving classes. Other sorts of community help.

As Teendabbywala & PSquared mentioned. PSAs & Masjids are the best places to interact with people.

Can’t wait to meet you :hugz:

Oh & if you are a huge shwarma fan. Let me warn you my friend :stuck_out_tongue: You’ll NOT find anything close to the real Shwarmas we have in Dubai. Evil me.

Re: A Question

aww I cant wait to meet u as well! so sweet.. lol what is this Khan BBQ? :cb:

hawww then what kind of shwarmey do u have lol

Khan BBQ is a restaurant in Chicago on Devon street. They have good Kabab Parathas waisay. But not puri like Parathas from Pakistan though. Another good thing about them is that they provide free Iftar for Rozaydars whole Ramadan. I think that’s very generous of them.

As far as kind of shwarma is concerned. Eeek don’t ask me. Most places just grill or boil their chicken with some unknown spices & put them on a greek bread with Tahina that doesn’t even taste like the original thing, lettuce & tomatoes & serve it.

There is a restaurant in South side of Chicago on Harlem & 98th I guess that comes very close to selling the real deal but then its too far.

I miss Chicago :bummer:

Re: A Question
