…Pakistani society back during the 80s. Okay, if you watch her videos like:
or
She’s baring her legs till her knees. I’m wondering how did people react to that? But then at the same time, everyone loves her and doesn’t question het character like people/aunties would nowadays. Granted, she’s possibly the most classiest woman to have ever lived but I find it a little odd that it was acceptable back then and not now, sadly. How did Pakistanis get so gudgemental?
It was the hippy influence on fashion all over the world in 80's, Zia-ul-Haq put restrictions for women in media to be dressed decently and then private channels and then Musharraf changed it again. It shows how politics and media rule our lives. So we should do what is right according to rules set by Allah and not by the rules of mortals.
So this was okay? As in people didn't go "haw haye!!" as they would nowadays? =/ it really saddens me to see how we became so narrow-minded. And how we'll probably never have anyone as classy as Nazia Hassan. Sigh.

Hippy fashon was back in the 1960s, not 80s!
And where exactly did the thread starter see any bare legs in these clips?
Nazia was wearing the thickest stockings i have ever seen in my life. (She was probably just wearing really long socks I guess?)
Have u seen old lollywood movies? Back then pakistan accepted media as a whole different world...and as a source for entertainment....the world wasn't as conservative as it is now(atleast the islamic world) I remember seeing pictures of my grand mother in quite nice sarees and some of my aunts pictures(who lived in afghanistan) she was wearing shorts and half sleeves in the picture from the early 70s
9/11 changed everything...people became far more conservative
And let's be honest people become far more famous once they die...sad but true...nazia had retired...noone spoke of her until her death was announced in the paper
While she was alive people accused her of being a druggie etc but as soon as she died she became a legend etc.
I think I'm going off topic lol
Regardless society today is confused they worship nazia hassan(who often wore western clothing) but now when a pakistani singer wears western clothing she's a wannabee...look at the crtisism that hadiqa, annie, nida, and meesha are facing today
^ I think the OP is asking a valid question. There is nothing wrong with being curious about media culture in past decades.
I actually wondered the same thing when i watched this video a few days ago. But I did think that maybe she was wearing stockings and thats why it might have been ok.
But also, if she was only wearing the dress with bare legs, I am pretty sure it was not shown on tv that way. PTV always censored everything they showed. They even censored videos of songs from old movies.
No matter what, Nazia Hassan was definitely an icon. Her fashion sense was great. There are very few people who looked good in the eighties and she was definitely one of them.
Sadly, the entire world has moved more the right, that is they are more conservative now, politically speaking. This is not reflected in the entertainment circuit in the west as it is dominated by their liberal segment. The shift to the right was catalyzed by the insane dictator called Zia-ul-Haq (may he rot in hell) who basically radicalized the whole population. He was from the rural-conservative setup of the Pakistani heartland and reflected his upbringing and background in his actions.
Nazia Hassan came from a pretty affluent Karachi-based (though her background is Punjabi) family. Trust me, Karachi is another planet compared to the rest of Pakistan. Being dressed the way Nazia is in the videos wouldn't result her in being called a "whore" there (as is the case in Lahore or Peshawar) as people are generally more tolerant there. Zia's crazy policies did hit Karachi but didn't permeate the upper class echelons to which she belonged. Her status also saved her from ridicule and finger pointing, though I know for a fact that a lot of people are very judgmental about her character.
These videos were not available to general population. They were not run on TV, and there was no other electronic outlet besides PTV. Remember, it was pre-internet era.

Character has absolutely nothing to do with baring legs. I have seen what some head-to-toe burqa-clad do. Even though she was one of the most popular and good-looking girl, yet I have never heard of any of Nazia's affairs with anyone.

I love her wasai, RIP.

I love her too. :)
She reminds me of my elder sister.
Those videos were shoot in UK or India and not shown on Pakistani media at that time. There was no internet. When Nazia appears on PTV she wear normal Shalwar Kameez always.
Normal people consider Naiza and Zohaib as Kafir( non muslim )and very bad people as they sing together. It was time of Afgaz Jihad against Soviet union. Only the new generation of high class families at that time were used to enjoy there songs.
After musharaff comes, values changed, so they become icon, Also the old gerneration passed away, who consider them as kafir.
Nazia never wear these dresses in Pakistani Media, and there was no Cable, No Internet, No Dish at that time.
^I think it was a comment by Zoib Hasan taht caused a lot of havoc among Pakistanis, he said something like "if Nazia wasn't my sister I'd marry her". I'm not sure if it's true though.

Your hatred for Punjabis can be smelt through your post. Disgusting.

.
In order to praise Nazia Hassan, we don't need to look down at burqa clad women or are we just being Pakistanis here?

You're living in denial -- I just stated what is known to all. There are tons of people from all over Pakistan living in Karachi, unlike the common perception that its home to just a specific ethnic group. A reason why Nazia could get away doing all that in Karachi is because it doesn't carry the buden of the weird and totally outdated caste-fragmented setup of Lahore where people with a liberal bent are classed as being "kanjars" while the musicians are labelled "bhaands". Just my observation, anyway.

It is the original poster who talked about 'baring legs' and its relation to her supposed 'character'. My comment was on that part.
