I think he was somewhere else with his thoughts
Its not possible he does not know how the door works
When was able to get IN normally
he also should know how to get OUT

yup..seen this one before...he was either thinking of something else...or..when he came in he just followed someone else so the door had already opened, and while leaving had no idea how it worked...
