a pakistani all- female version of junoon

Oh God!
Finally we are having a good discussion in Shor Sharaba!

Well as for a group like Junoon coming out from Pakistan. The chances are grim! People in Pakistan are still fascinated just by watching Nirma lip sync Shazia Mansoor songs!

People like Akif are the perfect reason why an all-girl band would have a hard time in the paki music industry. There's this stereotype that women just can't perform as well (musically that is) as men. I don't understand why. Hey, if women like Madonna and Melissa Etheridge can pull an audience, why can't a paki chic do it? It's all about the audience and if they have enough respect to appreciate talent regardless of the sex of the performer. But then again...we pakis always had a problem appreciating musical talent the right way - All the pakis I know in Pakistan (my bias) don't give ghans about music artists in Pakistan. it's like...I go to pakistan and once i saw Ali Azmat in a car and my whole family was like "haan, tho?" So I don't see how a female group would be easily accepted in Pakistan. However, some group of talented women should definitely make the endeavor and give the country something interesting to talk about!

pyariCgudia - that was absolutely priceless what you just said.

thumbs up for that !!

pyaricgudia.....u didnt read my comments in their entirety.

I know females can do well, and have done well in Pakistan music scene...Nazia Hassan, Hadiqa Kyani, Fariha Parvez and Humaira Arshad are few of my very favorite singers.

The question was.....can there be a female alternative to junoon. And well, to me, junoons music is performance oriented...i-e, without jumping jacks, high squeals, and lots of running around, their music wont be as popular. Aphrodite mentioned that it was their guitar accompaniment that impressed her. Tell u the truth, females can play guitar with the best of them...so its not even about their ability to play or not. But the vital difference, like i mentioned, is the physical contribution that the likes of Ali Azmat and Salman bring to the audience that rouses them up the way it does.
And well, because of cultural and modesty reasons, u wont see any Pakistani females jumping around stages the way junoon does. That is why I said I cant think of a female junoon like group.
That said, I believe, on the overall, there are more quality female singers in Pakistan than are male.
Nazia Hassan was more into soft-pop...different compared to Junoon. Hadiqa Kyani is perhaps the as close to junoon as u will see a Pakistani female. But her music isnt exactly rock.
To sum it up....can females attract audiences as well as males in Pakistan? They sure can..and they do
Can Pakistani females adopt a junoon like image in Pakistan? No...for whatever reasons that maybe..religious, social, moral etc.

Moral???

Ok my jaw just dropped …
I can’t even begin to conceive how it would be immoral. In any kind of way.

The fact is there are still big restrictions in Pakistan as to what people can do wrt showbusiness. It's no point in comparing with what we see abroad. and it doesn't just apply to women. If Junaid Jamshed started grabbing his crotch and referring to m/f b*****s on stage he'd probably get flogged within an inch of his life.

Times are changing slowly though and although there are no Spice Girl bands in Pakistan at the moment, there are some good singers. In an islamic country the fact that we had Nazia and now Hadiqa and the likes is still some achievement.

The pop scene is developing pretty fast in Pakistan so i don't think there's a need for anybody to be too negative about it.

Exactly!
Look Salman uses a lil workd like uloo ka pathaa! And look how they are ripping him in the image gallery!

I agree, I dont think Pakistan is ready for the Masala girls. Waisay I like Kaali mirich alot from Spice girls!

I said…whatever the reason may be for anyone. And you may or may not agree with it, but there are females in Pakistan who wont dance around a stage during a live show because they think its ‘immoral’. The other reasons I cited, cultural and religious, both lead to morality as well.
And well, if morality is not an issue, girls can go ahead and do whatever they want on stage. There is no physical restraint on them from doing so. But will they be accepted in Pakistan?
They may be accepted elsewhere, but they wont be perceived as Pakistani.

Note that whenever we have some group or singer in Pakistan (male or female) who goes, or wishes to go beyond the cultural limitations of Pakistan usually takes the trip across the border. eg, Komal rizvi, zeba bakhtiyar, anita ayub, and many others.

I have seen one female band from karachi.. I think it was called ‘symphony’ ..but It did’nt stay in the spot light for too long..I heard they used to get their songs composed from someone else!

But still I think it was a big move
