A Name For All Seasons

A lot of expat Pakistanis in US want to name their kids in such a way that they balance the sensibilities of both the desi culture as well as the Amreekan culture where the kid will grow up.

I heard a couple of fairly neat examples recently. I hope you guys have more.

  1. Our extended family. They told us, they have named their daughter “Mishaal” (meaning light or torch in urdu). Turns out they spell it “Michele”. Works both ways.

  2. A close friend named their son “Shaan” (fairly common name in Pak, meaning pride). Turns out they spell it “Sean”. Nice.

Any more examples?

Re: A Name For All Seasons

Shouldnt naming the baby be a passionate affair.
The moment you see and hold the baby for the first time, the first thought that comes to mind is what should motiviate people to name their kids.

I dont understand how people spend months before the baby is even born choosing names.

Re: A Name For All Seasons

^ i know! cos then you get some kids that when you look at them, they dont represent their names...a child must look like his/her name.

Re: A Name For All Seasons

I have no problems with people naming their children urdu names that sound similar in both cultures. However, how the heck do you get mishaal (which is a lovely name) to become michele? What's wrong with just keeping it mishaal? It maintains individuality, and uniqueness. Michele just becomes another name on the list.

And Shaan = Sean, don't even get me started on that one. I've always had a problem with Sean.

I once had a gora tell me he couldn’t pronounce my name cos it had too many letters in it…

I think its very silly that people would want to name their child purley on the basis of convience in pronounciation.

Re: A Name For All Seasons

disguising when you intentially intorduce yourself or name a business just to mix or give impression that you have western name. just try to get any benefit is wrong.
otherwise i know many names are same with different spellings
