ISLAMABAD, Aug 29: There is no chance of retrieving the body of Nawab Akbar Bugti from the cave in which he died for four to five days, military spokesman Maj-Gen Shaukat Sultan said on Tuesday.

However, he said, the bodies of three officers and four soldiers who were killed when the cave collapsed while they were entering it had been recovered and buried.

Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) director-general told a press conference that heavy machines could not be used to remove the earth as it might cause complete collapse of the cave. He said the entire work was being done manually, with adequate care.

If the cave collapsed further, the process could take even a month, he pointed out.

The general said Rs100 million and $96,000 cash, two satellite phones, documents, eight AK-47 rifles and some rockets were found in the rubble of the cave.

Giving details of the operation, he said armymen had rushed to the nine-foot-wide mouth of the L-shape cave after one of the two guides hired to help locate Nawab Akbar Bugti in the Kohlu area had signalled ‘he was inside’.

However, the general said, no sooner had the soldiers entered the cave a blast of ‘undetermined origin’ brought it down, burying the armymen alive.

No fighting or use of explosives preceded the ‘mysterious’ blast, the military spokesman said, adding that the search party had orders “to apprehend, not to kill” Nawab Bugti.

He said that soldiers had gone into the cave “to negotiate”.

He said Nawab Bugti and military officials had not been killed in any crossfire.

The ISPR chief said he was unaware of the number of Nawab Bugti’s companions who died in the cave.

On Aug 23, he said, two army helicopters were flying over the area where Nawab Bugti and his guards were believed to be hiding when the copters were fired upon from the ground. Despite having been damaged the copters returned to the base camp, he added.

A company of troops was dropped into the hilly area through helicopters on Aug 24 and a search operation was conducted the following day.

The troops, he said, found seven caves and reinforcement was sent on Aug 26 to search the cave one by one.

Maj-Gen Sultan said that two guides, who belonged to the Bugti tribe, had been hired to help troops in the search operation and one of the guides, who had been sent into a cave, rushed back confirming the presence of Nawab Akbar Bugti and some of his guards there.

“Having this information, four army officers, a JCO and two soldiers also rushed towards the cave and when they were at the cave’s opening, suddenly a blast took place and the cave collapsed causing death of army officials and all others who were already there,” he said.

About Nawab Bugti’s grandsons, the ISPR chief said: “There is no official statement that his two grandsons were there and I cannot speak about other members of his family.”

He ruled out the possibility of Nawab Bugti’s killing with the help of satellite phone tracking system. However, he confirmed that two Thuraya telephone sets had been recovered.

Maj-Gen Sultan expressed satisfaction over the law and order situation and said the writ of the government had been restored across the country. He said the operation would continue in parts of Balochistan and there would be no negotiations with ‘miscreants’.

Whether the cave fell or he was blown up or shot, with all due respect a traitor who takes up arms against the national army and the govt, talks of speratist intentions, damages public property and claims to have killed soldiers in dozens and many other lives without count is bound to end up like this. Not just in Pakistan, but in any country of the world.
And this is no uprising and has no similarity with Dhaka in 1971. Mujib had exploited the govt's neglect, while Bugti neglected the govt's attn in order to ensure his own well being and his own perpetual neglect of his land and people and tried to mislead the Baloch through the 'we are neglected by the rest of Pakistan drama', while all he was concerned about was his authority on his areas and going insane wondering what would become of him if the govt starts developing the land and people.
With Bengalis there was discrimination and neglect, with the Baloch it's more imagined or make believe than actual. People who were aware of politics on the ground in 1971 would confirm the diff between the mindset of the revloting Bengali of 1971 and the currently jubilant Balochi of 2006 on the ground. And this we speak of the common man, not sardars, nawabs, politicians and their kith and kin.
Our driver is a Balochi, he lives in a Baloch dominated area and had once served as (in his own words) a "slave" for the Mengals. He assures that every common Balochi from Mekran to Quetta is happy; but of course the political surf riders create dramas.
Nothing or no one is bigger than Pakistan!

Why don't we trial people? Who has given the army the right to commit extra judicial killings? Tommorow Musharraf can stand up and accuse you of taking up arms against the state and kill you and we are suppose to clap and say well done Mushy...way to go?

We Pakistanis are ourselves responsible for making the army a state within a state because we support them wether they hang a prime minister or kill an ex-governor/CM. We have given them this right to kill anybody they want because we are IDIOTS!

Even if Bugti was what he is being potrayed as the right way was to hold a trial not target killing!

Bodies are smashed but not the money or weapons...wow I am buying that for sure

And YES NOTHING AND NO ONE IS BIGGER THAN PAKISTAN NOT EVEN THE ARMY! NOT EVEN MUSHARRAF!

If that is so, why are Balochi’s, from Karachi to Quetta rioting?

The govt have acted like animals, refusing to even turn over the body for burial. The excuse is that they can’t reach it, but have some how reached the soldiers killed in the same cave, liars as usual

Re: ‘Mysterious’ blast caused collapse of cave: ISPR

When a cave falls, it can kill a living being, but a box or suitcase or carton with cash or other items does not necessarily have to disappear into thin air. Plus Gen Sultan clearly told Kamran Khan in a telephone interview on GEO last night that these recovered items are probably just the 1st of many more that may be lying farther in. And the reason some bodies are still unreachable is simple; it may be hard to reach due to the collapsed hill, or the body being under debris cant be moved carelessly or it could be damaged. The media has been there yesterday, if anyone is brave enough to take a camera in for "exlusive footage of bugti's body" they were welcome to yesterday by the army. All media ppl did was take pictures of the cave's mouth and rush back. They can be asked what they observed, strange how there's little reporting on what the media ppl found there.

And as for trials, if God forbid, i go out on a rampage and start blowing up electric transformers, police cars, and shoot cops, with a rational mind I could expect to be shot after only 1 warning. Bugti was dealt with in various ways for over a year and he arrogantly claimed his own crimes with pride. Being tried would have been better, but the law is not the govt's weakness. The law gives the govt right to deal with those indulging in crimes.

And yes, not even Musharraf or the Army are bigger than Pakistan!

Those who listened or read Shaukat Sultan’s statement has also found this link interesting.

Bugti and every other Baloch has been targetted and killed by army, whther they get punisment or not. And as ISPR made it clear itself, the slaughter will continue.

Re: ‘Mysterious’ blast caused collapse of cave: ISPR

I find it hard to believe this "mysterious blast" theory.
