A little joke & a serious question

First the joke, for those who still have a sense of humor & post in this forum:

At the day of judgment three people were sitting in line to be asked about their deeds in this world & there was this angel in-charge doing all the calculations. So, he asks the first person his name. He replies “My name is Yunus” .. at which the angel replied “According to the instructions given to us, if you know & can recite to us Surah Yunus, you will be shown great mercy & might end up in heaven.” That person happened to be Hafiz-e-Qura’an and he goes on to recite it without any problem. And consequently, he is shown mercy & ends up in heaven.

The second person comes up and the angel asks him his name, to which he replies “Yousuf”. The angel goes on to tell him the same deal that if he knows Surah Yousuf & can recite it all, he will be shown mercy. He also happened to be Hafiz-e-Quran & gets his way to heaven.

Now comes the third one, all scared and timid. And the angel asks him his name and replies: “Even though my true name is Yaseen, my Mom always called me Kausar”

Ok, now the serious question:

Does anyone know who named the Surahs? Because if I remember correctly, AnHazoor (saw) didn’t name ‘em, nor was the Quran divided into 30 Paras in his time.

About that 30 siparay thing... I don't think the Quran used by Arabs has it - maybe they do - but I have not seen the 30 siparay printed or available anywhere in Masjid-al-Haram or Masjid-al-Nabwi. Its always one quran and then they have selected suras printed separately. I have only seen 30 siparay printed separately by Pakistani publishers.

Not sure about the names or who named them.

In Arabic the saparay are called JUz. There are 30 Juz in the quran. However, they do not have much significance as they were not there in the times of teh Prophet :saw: nor the Sahaba:razi: These divisions in chapters were later added for our own convenience. You would also note that the division of chapters in Pakistan is different from the one done in Saudi Arabia.

Following will help you in depth:

Azmat-e-Quran and Taaruf Surah Fatiha](http://www.tanzeem.org/tanzeemeislami/dtq2003/taarufequran%20and%20surah%20fatiha.ram)

if anyone wanna download the file, right click HERE](http://www.tanzeem.org/tanzeemeislami/dtq2003/taarufequran%20and%20surah%20fatiha.ra) and choose the option “Save Target As…”

Since not all of us have access to audio and speakers, so can you list down here the gist of the argument?

give me some time and I will try my best :insha:
Basically, one point at this time I can tell is that it talks about how juz (paaray) were never in the time of Rasoolulah:saw: and Sahaabaa kiraam Ridhwaanullah Alaiyehay Ajma’een.

It was much later thing that was introduced and that too without any sound formula.

^ Well, yeah, thats pretty much what I suspected and laeeqkhan said earlier too. I was hoping for some more historical persepective on naming of suras.

the arabic Qurans, those printed in saudi arabia as well, do have the 30 para thing....
besides the 30 para they have things called "hez" (a para divided by 2) and each hezb is divided in 4 parts....

the division, like this, is just to help people to memorize more in an ordered way, to know where to stop when reading a long surah, etc etc....

it does not alter the content or the meaning of the Quran in any way....

the names of the Surahs r just names....
put there to identify them....
and they r not fixed....
what we call as surah dahr, is called surah insaan elsewhere....
what we know as surah momen, is called surah ghafir elsewhere....
surah bani israel is called surah al-israa as well....
surah fussilat is called surah ha-mim-alsajda elsewhere....

they r just for identification....
doesnt matter who named them....
the prophet (saw) did ont use names for the surahs....
he wud say "was-samaa-e-wat-tariq" or "iza zulzilat-elardu zilzalaha" i.e. the first few words of the surah to identify them....
