I have been pondering on this for quiet some time … and I need some opinions.
Is music/acting discouraged in Islam or is it prohibited or neither?
If discouraged, then on what grounds and to what extent … how can one draw a line?
If prohibited … then by what order? Ref. please!
Also, if one can listen to music, then why not play it? If one can watch the movies then why not act in one? Like join a band, or on TV, theaters etc.
NOTE: I am posting this in Shor Sharaba with the intention to hear the views of those who do listen to music. Maybe later we can transfer this over to Religion … for an expert opinion from the ‘Maulana’(s)!

Ya know…I’ve heard a lot of religious people saying that muslims are not allowed to watch tv, listen to or make music, etc. But no1 that I’ve heard say that has been able to qoute a passage from the Quran or a Hadith supporting it. I know for a fact that that the instrument dhol (paki drum) was used in the Rasul’s time. It was even used on his wedding day and/or wife’s dholki.(I’m not sure which occasion). Someone, maybe on this board, used the passage in the Quran to support that music, etc is not allowed. I haven’t gotten a chance to check out these passages.
The Noble Qur’an - Al-Isra 17:64
Also, someone once told me there’s a passage in the Quran that prohibits “idle talk”, and that some of these maulanas use this phrase to include music and tv (since society, in their opinion, can be run without music and tv). I do not agree with that personally. I think by “idle talk”, God meant gossip. But then, that’s my bias!
Haha - yes maulanas usually do get carried away with stuff. But don't let the image of Islam that maulanas project confuse you with the real Islam. Islam is not about restrictions you know, even though we desis sometimes tend to make it so. Islam is much more about freedom than restriction. Its all in how you see it also, since Islam is more individualistic than most people like to think.
