a good n tested recipe for khatti daal

i need a good recipe for khatti daal. i think there r many ways of making it so pls post a tested recipe which u have. im interested in this one i had which was khatti daal in a soupy form.

Re: a good n tested recipe for khatti daal

by soupy do u mean really thin? I can give a recipe for a south indian dish called sambar my mum learnt it from her south indian friend...its made with daal (obviously) green beans and imli its really nice...but im not sure if thats what ure looking for!

Re: a good n tested recipe for khatti daal

Boil a cup of masoor (pinkish orange one) daal with 4-5 cups of water (because it swells up a lot), 2-3 chopped tomatoes, a tbs of lemon juice (I prefer this to imli), some haldi and salt. When tender, mix with a hand blender to get it to a smooth consistency.

For the taRka, fry one chopped onion, zeera, sabut red chilli, green chillies, mustard seeds and kalonji seeds and curry patta. When brown, pour over daal.

Re: a good n tested recipe for khatti daal

yes u can post the recipe for sambar too.
khatti daal is a little different i believe, but i dun mind trying out sambar too!

Re: a good n tested recipe for khatti daal

ill post it tomorow because my mum is asleep now!

yummmmmmmmmm. SO making it this weekend!

Our cook is from Rajisthan and he makes it often.

I've seen him boil 'arhar' daal with haldi, red chilli powder and a tablespoon of oil.. then 1/2 cup of imli.

The tarka is mustard seeds, whole red chillies (dried) and curry leaves. (karri patah)

Re: a good n tested recipe for khatti daal

which one is the "arhar" daal?

hey gina for the imli, how areyou supposed to use it anyways? I've this packet of imli which I just store in my fridge but I know from just general info that ure supposed to soak it before using it. How does that help? And for how long do I soak it, also do I get rid of the water of this imli before using it or use it with the water?

Soak it in warm water for 10-15 mins.. and mash it with a fork..strain it and use the pulp. :)

Re: a good n tested recipe for khatti daal

but what is the "arhar" daal ??

Re: a good n tested recipe for khatti daal

thanks guys! arhar dal is also a type of dal its probably available at stores in the section for dals.

okliedokliess!!

Re: a good n tested recipe for khatti daal

It is also called toor daal.

It is a very popular daal in India and in Sindh in Pakistan. But as majority of people here are probably from Punjab, they do not know about it.

Wow thats really very tasty.

Arhur daal kitchri is also very very delicous!

We eat it with desi ghee during Mango season with raw mango chutni salad with onion.
