A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

Hello Everyone!

Haven’t posted here in a while… Glad to see the community thriving and vibrant as ever!

The last 3 years have been really frantic and i seem to have lost count of major events in my life, nothing more than a hazy recollection… It so happens that after periods like this, you come to a point where you have to make a career / life decision. Paklinks has always been a great source of guidance and solid opinion when it comes to major life decisions - I owe my career to the guidance I have received over the years from forum members.

Scenario:

Company has offered a relocation option to one of their teams in the US. Given the nature of our work (IT) they are flexible with city I might want to settle in.

This itself is a big source of confusion for me - I’ve never been to the US and hardly know anything about the cities.

I’ve been going over websites to see surveys of good places to live. But still lost.

I would appreciate if you guys can help me decide here
The intial cities I shortlisted with them are:

  • Philadelphia
  • Atlanta
  • Chicago (The image I have of Chicago is a city riddled with Gangs and criminals, with really old and ugly buildings)
  • Dallas
  • Houston
  • New York ( Just the name of this city sends a chill down my spine, I think of dirty alleys, crime infested neighbourhoods, mean people on subways - please tell me its otherwise.)
  • Los Angeles

In addition, I am also planning to ask them about the possiblity of one of these cities, if we have teams there:

  • San Diego

  • SanFrancissco Bay area

  • Irvine

  • HollyWood? :'D (is it even a city?)

  • New Jersey

Is there any other city worth considering that i may jave left out?

My concerns in choosing a city:

This is the first time I’ll work outside Middle east or pakistan - so I am not sure what to expect in terms of lifestyle and culture - I have spent the major portion of my life between Saudi and Pakistan…

Which of these cities is the most accomodating for foreigners?

Low crime / racial tension? Educated people?

Availibility of Halal food?

Low state taxes

I prefer living in places that are not crowded, where can I expect accomodation to be more affordable?

Continuing education - do any of these cities have good and affordable universities?

Weather - I grew up playing soccer in 43 C (110 F) - so I am good with heat, never experienced snow or harsh winters.

Transportation and infrastructure? I hate the thought of using a crowded subway in the mornings!

There is also a discussion on whether I would be eligible for the L1A or will I have ti use the L1B? From what I read, it seems that the L1A is a better option and the L1B might require a lot of additional government paperwork. Any experiences here? What’s the likelihood of getting a PR and citizenship on this track?

I have always been fascinated by the US but now I’m getting cold feet and second thoughts about moving there. I hear that the corporate culture in the US is brutal… No affectionate colleagues, no considerate bosses and no second chances if you mess up…

Sorry for the long post. Please do share your feedback, I’m at crossroads here.

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

move to texas, everything cheap and low taxes and houses. And you have to have a car for transportation anywhere you go except for maybe NY city

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

... all the mental image you have are of what they show in gangster movies lol Not very accurate if you ask me.

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

Hello Pisiform thanks for the feedback. Texas means Dallas and Houston, right? What's the weather there like? And i really hope what they show in movies isn't accurate.. Not a pretty picture.
Thanks again - let's see what others have in mind too..

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

Yes Houston and Dallas. I have been to Houston. Lots of Halal places and huge desi community in Houston (and I think Dallas too). You won't have problem finding halal desi food. Weather is hot there - imagine heat of Multan lol. Very dry. It doesn't snow at all usually. But its a huge state, cheap houses compared to NY and chicago. (NY and Chicago - gets cold and snows over winter,, and a good summer weather).

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

What is the racism like in Texas?

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

You can find one or two racist every where. Generally south is racist but not major cities like dallas, houston, austin. Its the inner cities and ghettos and white washed areas more likely

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

Based on everything what you wrote and i must say your scenario is very interesting but not so unique, here is what i've shortlisted for you:

1) Houston
2) Dallas

Thats it. Dont think about any colder place you'll be really thinking why did u make that decision coming out of UAE. And basically these two places are doing very well as far as IT is concerned. So trust me you wont regret this.
@us1415 and @khattichic can help more

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

Houston and Dallas definitely. First of all, Texas does not have a state income tax, so automatically the cost of living is lower and your money goes much farther and gets you more. Secondly, Texas is all about wide open spaces lol....it's cleaner and less crowded. Weather wise, it's also very comparable to Pakistan/ME. We don't have arctic winters or snow storms (Dallas is a little finicky, ice is common here about once in a winter season, but no, not any snow accumulation, Houston is extremely humid since it is in the Gulf coast, and doesn't get as cold as Dallas can sometimes). Both Dallas and Houston have significantly large desi/Muslim populations. You'll find numerous masjids, Halal food options, grocery stores in every suburb so that's not a problem.

I am partial to Dallas as I've lived here my whole life. I find it less congested then Houston, and the people here are extremely nice. No, racism is not rampant. It's a safe place and very family friendly. Feel free to PM me if you would like more specifics on the Dallas area.

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

Thanks pisiform amd psyah, i guess that will be part of the package and I'll try to steer clear

Re: A good city for someone starting out in “amreeka”

Thanks @SID_NY i appreciate your feedback i have now shortlisted these two cities and have to see what I get from my employers now.

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

Thanks @khattichic For the detailed insight. Its now between Houston and Dallas I guess. I'll definitely contact you once I need some guidance on residential areas.

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

I've gone through some the videos on YouTube of Dallas. Seems like the city has a prairie landscape...

Most people say that while crime is generally low, but whenever it occurs, its very violent - lots of car chase videos of Dallas as well...

Are the people there aggressive? Because in one of the car chase videos, a suspect rear ends a minivan and then a lady gets out of that minivan and beats the living daylights out of that thug! Saw a bit of Lyari there, for those of you who know what Lyari is...

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

I guess the low humidity in Dallas tips the balance im its favor too.... Humid summers are horrible!

I've gone to few community sites like Pakistani texans association and stuff... Most of them seems to be dormant....

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

Thanks again everyone for your help here, means a lot to me...

Re: A good city for someone starting out in “amreeka”

lol, no people here are not aggressive and we don’t have an access of violent car chases :rotfl:

there are tons and tons of cultural/Pakistani social activities, the community is thriving here, but yea, you won’t find much of a website presence

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

I've got lots of family in Houston.. love it there :D

Re: A good city for someone starting out in “amreeka”

Houston is one of the best places to live since there is a lot of things to do here. If you have lived in Karachi Houston is something that is exactly like Karachi as far as the weather go. As long as your job is inside you sholudnt have an issue with the weather since every place here has A/C. Here is a list of zabiha places from zabihah.com for Texas. Houston has the 2nd largest desi populatiojn after New York and Tied with Chicago.

Halal places in Texas - zabihah.com: your guide to halal eating

I also work in IT and know quite a few people here who work in IT and the work here is always in demand. I am not too sure about Dallas. You talked about racism which is only towards east texas. You wont find racism in the major cities like Houston or Dallas.

Re: A good city for someone starting out in "amreeka"

San Francisco Bay Area is the hub of I.T as everybody knows. Temperature here is extremely pleasant. If you rent an apartment or a house in a good school district then that solves your problem of nice free public education for kids &if you yourself wants to continue your education San Jose State University is very economical. There are tons and tons of halal restaurants, grocery stores. You can find mosque in every City here. Having said that, the housing market here is CRAZY. In a good school district a nice two bedroom apartment rent wont b less than $2600- $3000/month and that is the biggest drawback of the Bay Area.
