A finger to these sugar mill owners

I hope these criminal sugar mill owners are made to pay more than they hoarded in their baniya stomachs. I hope their case become an examplary punishment for such mafia in Pak.

I am sure there many more such mafia in our country, but sugar mill owners are the worst of them all.

ISLAMABAD (July 08 2006): The government has directed the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) to launch a campaign against 24 sugar mills to charge 25 percent duty on C&F value on raw sugar imported between February 2005 and January 2006, it was learnt here on Friday.

Sources said the issue of raw sugar imported by mills at zero-rated duty came under severe criticism at a meeting held here some times back. Adviser to prime minister on finance and revenue, Dr Salman Shah, was in the chair.

Sources said the meeting was given a detailed presentation by State Bank (SBP) officials on raw sugar imported by the mills between February 2005 and January 2006. The presentation included names of mills and imported raw sugar in each case.

The meeting was told importers-cum mill-owners exploited the concession of zero-rated duty for raw sugar import but did not pass on the benefit to end consumers.

The meeting was informed majority of the mills imported raw sugar during the first three to four months of 2005, but did not process it until sugar prices went up to Rs44 per kg in the open market.

The meeting was informed these sugar mills imported raw sugar at $200 per ton and their landed cost was around Rs16 per kg. But they kept on hoarding imported raw sugar till the beginning of the crushing season 2005-06.

They processed the imported raw stock once the situation turned into their favour to mint billion of rupees without paying any tax to the government.

Sugar prices start falling as imports continue to pour in

PRICES of some essential commodities rose again on the Karachi wholesale commodity markets last week under the lead of pulses. Both dealers and brokerage houses held on to their stocks thus creating pressure on ready supplies and consequent increase in the prices. Physical business was relatively slow owing to higher prices. Larger imports of sugar seem to have stabilised its prices at the Utility Stores where it is now available at around Rs27.50 per kilo. But on other retail outlets, prices vary from area to area. The commodity, however, is available throughout the country. During the week two ships loaded with sugar arrived and are in the process of unloading at the port.

According to press reports mill owners have also offered to release stocks to official channels at the landed cost of the imported stuff which could further ease the prevailing price situation, dealers said. But some official sources said that there could be pressure on commodity’s supply due to various reasons, including predictions of another short crop. However, the current buffer stock of a million tons build through regular imports is expected to keep a check on future speculative flare-ups.

Re: A finger to these sugar mill owners

Like the first post said, they are offering to sell it at import prices because they themselves imported it. To me, it’s nothing but a crime. Import was allowed to help alleviate people’s sufferings due to hoarding of these baniyas. Instead, these sugar mills THEMSELVES imported sugar, and NOW THEY ARE OFFERING TO SELL IT AT IMPORT PRICE?!
That is why these baniyas need a finger. I can think of many cuss words that these criminals so dearly deserve. Too bad paklinks doesn’t allow them.

Their offer to sell sugar at import prices also proves that they were hoarding sugar so as to make the prices go up. Now they have no choice left.

http://www.dawn.com/2006/06/16/top1.htm
Commenting on the offer, a city trader said it proved that the industry was indeed holding sufficient stocks to clear huge debts. “This is exactly what the government has been claiming and the industry has been denying all this while. The industry stopped printing its stock position in January. And now when pressure has been exerted on them, they are offering to sell their stocks to the government at sugar’s import price. But this is extremely unfair. All this sugar has been produced in Pakistan and there is no reason why the government should buy it at higher prices,” he said.

It was said that sugar industry is run by high officials with contacts in government. Now it is good to see nepotism in this industry feeling the heat. Kudos to government officials who have these baniyas’ back against the rope.

Re: A finger to these sugar mill owners

Some of the big sugar mills are also owned by Shahbaz Sharif and family, as well as their supporters.

Re: A finger to these sugar mill owners

The most Ecologically friendly use of refined sugar is to convert to alcohol and burn it in cars.
Refined sugar and Hi Fructose Corn Syrup are the worst processed food mankind has developed.

Re: A finger to these sugar mill owners

Ok. But the point you are maing is not clear.
