Yesterday I was helping a friend set up his S3. This gentleman doesn’t know the difference between an app and a pothole (:D) and had bought this awesome phone upon my recommendation. Now he’s totally not getting it.
Anyway, when trying to explain a few things to him, I realized that while I may understand the concepts, I do not understand some processes, hence I didn’t do a good job of explaining things to him. I’d be grateful if u could help me understand a few things please:
What is the meaning of “push notification?” I know what it does but explain.
Explain tethering and Mobile HotSpot. What’s the difference?
Push notfication as oppose to you pull that info by hitting a button. Push means that as soon the info is available, system is going to push it to you.
The person I’m talking about asked me if Viber works with S3. And we’re not talking rooted S3s here. We’re talking store bought baby childs that have ice-cream sammich. Then he asked me if he can get his emails on S3. I’m like yes, this is a smart phone. He’s like oh, that’s good to know.

As TLK already answered, Push notification means the notifications for new emails, new SMS's etc., that you see on your notification bar.
Tethering means connecting mobile phones data connection (3G, LTE or whatever) to another device by the means of direct USB cable, Bluetooth or WiFi. Mobile Hotspot means creating a Adhoc WiFi network on your mobile phone to share its internet connection with another device through WiFi (Tethering through Wireless).
since you asked… here’s the formal definition of a push-notification from my slideset in my M-Commerce course
A push notification is a message from an app that appears on the device even when the app may not be running in the foreground. It’s an explicit opt-in persmission channel and can work with any IP-connected device.
Now that didn’t really help did it… oh well I tried
