A Doctor Needs Help

I would like thank all the people who have been taking the time to read the forums and trying to give sincere advice to others. May Allah give you hassanat for making the effort to help others.

Anyways I am trying to help someone so please help me. A doctor is coming from Pakistan. He has completed his Medi school and house job in Pakistan. He wants to practise in Canada, his immigration papers will be done within the year. What can he do that will help him in Canada while waiting in Pakistan? Where should he start once he gets to Canada? If you know any websites that would also be helpful. Any information related to this topic will be helpful.

Canadians have a totally different system then the americans. He can log on to http://rcpsc.medical.org and then browse in. He may be able to get information what he is looking for, however, he can start the process of his housejob/residency verification from now while he is waiting for his visa b/c sometimes it takes more then a year for them to get the verification from Pakistan. While he is waiting in Pakistan he can try doing either post graduate study or at least 2 to 4 months of psychiatry rotation if he has not done it at all as they require it. I hope this may help him, GOOD LUCK to him.

Thanks Mickey for taking the time.

I was not clear on verification of the house job that you mentioned. If you can explain that part that would be great.

practicing is a pain in Canada (my mother is a doctor). I pray this person you're talking about is single - otherwise it is almost impossible.

Hafeez thanks for the website.

hskhan... yes the person is single. Do you mean it is demanding, like working long hours or something difficult to get into?

PLUS,
Malaysia is looking to RECRUIT Pak doctors and I would say that he would be happier in Malaysia.

In CDA - even after qualifying after gruelling number of years he/she will be registered to practise in rural or small town setting where the shortage is and this fast-paced program(link @ previous post) for foreign-trained doctors is designed to ameliorate that shortage.

All the best.

Sorry my friend I was out of town so couldnot get back to you early. Your friend has to remember that working enviorment for a physician in US/Canada is totally different then in Pakistan. Esp. in US b/c of the malpractice issues many doctors and thinking of quiting the profession, this I am informing not to discourage your friend but this is the reality. Like hskhan has mentioned about her mother I am pretty sure she must have to miss many important family occassions b/c of her profession, also like hafeez123 has mentioned about foreign doctors working in rural/health shortage areas this is very common in US also. All those doctors who came to US on J1 visas all have to do their waivers for J1 otherwise thay have to go back to their respective countries for at least 2 years after their residencies. As far as you have asked for the verification every single person who comes to US/Canada their credentials are always verified from their respective colleges/universities, they want to make sure that one has legitimate credentials. If your friend e-mails to Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada (the site I gave you in my previous post) they will definately respond him/her, they are very prompt in that. As far as being single /married is concerned well this is life and if one wants to have a bright future then tell your friend be prepared for the sacrifice. Life of a 1st year resident is a hell it eases somewhat in 2nd year and as a 3rd and 4th year you are OK, after graduation job is a piece of cake then, you just have to adjust your lifestyle if you end up in a smaller town. I hope this helps your friend tell him the most accurate information he will get from the rcpsc and should start the process.
Wasalaam

I agree it would not be an easy process for anyone, but i guess if one has his mind set and is determined enough he could get through it. I have been talking to some other people just casually, many of them say foreign pakistani doctors have no hope in canada. In another words, people have been very discouraging. Some have said that the exams are not the hard part, the difficult part is finding a residency in Canada. Any ideas or thoughts about that??? However, the website that hafeez123 has suggested, it seems as things are changing in some parts of canada. I guess sometime one can only do his best and leave the rest to Allah.

Anymore ideas or help out there???/
