A critical look at the Pak economy

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

A little bit exaggeration! Kundas are a common feature in almost every kachi abadi in Karachi that includes the stronghold of other parties as well - PPP, ANP and others not just MQM.

Sorry to say, you will call it a rant, but I would say that MQM is not the only "guneghar" in this country.

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

The common feature is these poor kunda consumers generally pay monthly fixed charges to these ghundas working for the political parties....I am personally aware of the report of murdered MD....believe me if other political parties are responsible for 10% of the problem, MQM is responsible for 90%....and this is happening for last many many years....we must give the credit where it rightly belongs...

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

No my brother...I'll never call it a regular rant...I have utmost respect for you and know very well you always post with responsibility....and impartially...

The idea is not to critisize anyone one for the heck of it...we just point out the wrong doings no matter who is doing it...because ultimately it's our national loss...and you and I being the tax payers pay for these robberies...it's our money...

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

Well, theft of electricity in most cases is a crime committed individually by people although in some places it might have been "institutionized" by the Ghunda parties like MQM.

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

It's more institutionalized than you can imagine...

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

The above mentioned post by Saleem is highly misleading…the problem in Karachi is mismanagement in KESC and the reasons for same are given in the report of murdered MD…

If we make a comparision between Lesco and KESC…the things will get more clear…I have taken my data from following web sites which can be easily varified…

http://www.lesco.gov.pk/Organization/1000044.asp

http://www.kesc.com.pk/FinancialReports/5.pdf

Karachi has a much larger population compared to Lahore…inspite of this Lahore has 2.9 million billed consumers compared to Karachi’s 2.0 million consumers…

**Line losses with KESC are about 42% compared to Lesco’s 12%…

Total annual billing for Lesco for the year June 2006 was 56 Billion Rupees compared to KESC 41 billion rupees…

Percentage of commercial consumers with LESCO is about 3 times compared to KESC…

While LESCO made a profit of 98 million rupees for year ended june 2006 (june 2005 profit was 4.3 billion rupees)…KESC made a 12.16 billion rupees loss…**

The problem of Karachi is political electricity theft which should be dealt with according to the slain MD’s report…while honest Karachi consumers are being misled by making sweeping false statements such as Mr. Saleem made…the fact remains over the years a political party has made thefts worth billions of rupees for their own personal/party benefit…the rest of the country keeps on paying these thefts…and nobody is intrested in putting up power plants to supply electricity to KESC with these affairs…and I am afraid Karachi consumers will suffer much more than rest of the country and the same political party will tell Karachi consumers that it is because of prejudice against them…

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

Area of Operation

LESCO's area of responsibility covers Civil Districts of Lahore, Kasur, Okara and Sheikhupura.

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

Will this not make a difference?

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

But surely theft of power in Karachi is the worst in the country, I think.

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

It all started in late 80's. People increased their electricity consumption considerably but were not ready to pay bills - washing machines, acs, tvs in every room etc.

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

I don't think it's the people....it's the mafia with political mask....we are talking 17 billion rupees of electricity theft per annum happening for many years....and people getting murdered who talk about it...

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

Surely he was killed for reporting that but probably his report covered only one aspect of the whole case.

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

Whatever the different aspects of the whole case are...unless the situation with KESC changes with regard to theft of electricity the power situation in Karachi will not change....WAPDA is no more intrested in supplying electricity to KESC....new owners of KESC are now least intrested in running the company...Siemens has withdrawn themselves from managemnt obligations of KESC...private IPPs do not want to make long term contracts with KESC...

People who want to divert attention from the core issue with KESC blame overstaffing and unions at KESC....or blame WAPDA for not supplying enough electricity....the core problem of KESC is the theft....

Anyway the report of slain MD can be partial but doesn't mean he should have been murdered brutally...these kind of tactics are really shameful...

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

Yes indeed! And that is done by almost everyone.

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

....and because of terror spread by people who even resort to murder it has become impossible to stop it...

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

Mainly due to MQM backed Union!

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

Industries are number one in power theft!

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

May be the best solution can be to hand over the management to MQM....but then with this logic the whole Karachi should be handed over to them....well Musharraf has practically handed over the management of Karachi to them....and many people believe they are doing a good job...also thanks to 42 billion rupees of extra grant provided by federal government from FDF....why not giving the management of KESC to them as well...

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

Indeed they asked for it last year during power riots.

Re: A critical look at the Pak economy

I am all in favour of this....I think it's the only solution...and after the take over if the continue with whatever they have been doing in the past...the riots will be directed towards them...but then where the money will come to run the head quarter in London...
