Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
Kaleem, let me make another assumption... you are rude moron
:D how is that?
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
Keep going, your remarks are a testament to your upbringing.
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
What would you like to see her do to justify all the ho hum.
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
sure they do. My parents are the best! Another thing you cannot hope to equal…
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
I am not so sure about your parents, however, I am certain that you are a twit brain child who likes to mouth off to people without knowing them or making an attempt to understand their question.
Sarah, I am not against the Mai... I am against the sho sha whcih will not accomplish anything at all. Everything will go back as it was soon enough. What we need is a reform in the villages....I am not sure that receiving rewards in US is going to accomplish that.
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
But it brings the problem out into the open and encourages other women who have been raped to speak out, see that they can still be valuable and not something "less" because they were raped. Good modeling.
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
^^ kaleem if u read the above....thats exactly what the conference was for....to inform the public as to what her movement is all about and what she is accomplishing...people wanted to know why they should support this woman.
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
I am suitably castigated (although I still think you to be very rude). Now let us know what would you have her do or what would you have the international community do? Press the ignore button and move on?
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
She raised the issue in front of the world, while Musharraf was trying to pull wool over the world's eyes. How can a problem be solved when some don’t even want to acknowledge it exists?
The fact that Mukhtaran is alive is itself minor miracle. In most other cases, rape victims are forced to commit suicide to save the family 'izzat'. If not that, someone kills them. That fate has still not fully escaped Mukhtaran, and this makes her stand against jihalat even more courageous.
One can hope someone in America will take notice and force Musharraf to take concrete and real steps to combat this menace instead of the usual lip service. One can only hope.
Of course there will still be people who hate Mukhtaran because their precious izzat has been hurt. To these people, ‘izzat’ is more important than justice, and not this woman's 'izzat', but their own. Feudal thinking at its finest. It's more important that no one finds out about a crime, than the crime itself or justice.
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
Mukhtaran Mai is one of the courageous woman of recent times...I really appreciate the way she fought back for justice...She took the step which is hardly seen in Our history...she is simply BRAVE.
Pakistani government on the other part is such a shame that the whole pool of ministers (which is around 140+) with support of Army backing up their lives can't hang Captain Emaad (Dr.Shazia case), People of Jirga (Mukhtaran Mai case) and Son of Bhayani (Who raped his female servant and then burnt her afterwards and she died). They should be ashamed of theirselves but unfortunatley they are pretty proud what they have been doing...These people won't realise until it would happen with their own family..
But there is one more side of this picture...WHY Mukhtaran Mai is getting that much attention here in Western media...WHYYYYYYYYYYYY?
Dreamz u and SARA met her and i really apprecaite your feelings but i still don't understand why we would never heard of the gang rape victims in India or in Indian Kashmir or Iraq or East Asia or Philipines...WHY??? Don't they have any gangrapes back there or we are simple enough not to look at those figures or might be Inidan media is smart enough to cover accordingly...In last decade or so the most gang rapes have been happened in Indian Kashmir and have been done by Army but why we never heard of any raped victim of Indian Kashmir in Kritsoff's column in Washinton Post...WHY ????
Because this is all planned and spreaded by Indian or Anti Pakistan lobby here in US...
Yet Musharraf and his government is ILL and rediculous not to punish his own people...I don't have any argument on that but the only thing is WHY Pakistan?
I hope and pray that she would get the right justice but nothing would fill the wounds in any case....If after all this attention if Pakistani government will hang those jirga people or all the rape criminals like SP of Faisalabad , son of Bhayani, Captain or whoever is it then i would surely thought that the whole propaganda made sense but if not...then who is been victimised here Mukhataran Mai or Pakistan...
Regards
Salman
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
Good points asalmank, but if army government had quickly provided justice to all these victims, none of this would be a media issue, now would it?
If we have no porblem sending our army after our own people in Waziristan or Karachi hunting for "terrorists", why are we so afraid to send our army to hunt for rapists? It would take 5 min for Musharraf to make a phone call to his crops commander to send in a army team to arrest/kill these criminals. If he has no problem doing this when he gets orders from CIA to get al qaida terrorists, why the whole FIR/police/court dramabazi in these cases, which usually goes nowhere?
Makes no sense.
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
Kaleem is right. If you think these feel good frilly awards go towards helping any of the millions of oppressed women in rural areas like the NWFP, then you are being painfully naive.
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
This is because every other way of convincing the Pakistani military government to take a bold step against these crimes is working so wonderfully, right? This is a country where even the lota parliament cannot pass a bill against honour killing, as symbolic as it may be.
Ones hope is that international pressure can be bought to bear on the shameless Pakistani government and the feudal lords. Of course this may never work, but at least people with a conscience can say to Allah they tried every way to defeat the evils of mankind. Unlike some others whose only job is to point out the faults in everything others do for positive change. What’s worse publicity than the crime itself now?
Short of an armed revolution, this is all one can do now since the state has already decided to through these victims to the wolves. If media spotlight was not given to Mukhtaran, no one would know of her crime and she likely would be dead.
Ok, to all those naysayers tell us what you are doing or planning to do to combat injustice in Pakistan?
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
For starters I would pull my head out of the ground and realize that collecting these token awards will hardly make Musharraf shake in his boots or some wadera chaudhry quiver with fear. Instead, all this international recognition and attention should be channeled towards the Pakistani government in the form of proposing changes in the laws enacted by Parliament.
Instead of focussing on Mai, focus on her cause. I can bet that if she ever gives a press conference documenting the Hudood and Panchayat laws and highlights Musharraf and the Pakistan govt’s deliberate failure to curtail such practices, then Pakistan will be compelled to supply a fitting response. She has nothing to fear, she has asylum in the US and such actions will benefit similar women in Pakistan a lot more than some school in a village. Best of all, these things don’t cost money, which means a lot more left to donate to NGO’s who are currently working for similar causes.
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
well that comes down to faith again doesnt it? we can say this about any organization claiming to help the needy. how do we know it really went to them?..even in the case of providing help with our own two hands we cannot always be sure that the person receiving is really needy…
Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
salman i would like to ask you then why is it that the rapists have not been brought to justice? is all this western attention, pressure and a bad image of pakistan preferrable over bringing them to justice? the point is that this woman was BRAVE enough to speak out against the injustice while knowing that her very life was in danger. if she had not, like the millions of other rape victims you speak of…she would have been just another number. yes it is true that different organizations have played a huge role in helping her out but I feel that the biggest struggle comes from within…even the strongest organizations and powerful pen becomes useless if the person is not optimistic herself. and after meeting her, anyone can see how her optimism shines thru. and as far as anti-pak groups go…it is anyone’s guess…burden of proof lies on the accuser to prove that “ANAA” and “SAKHI” are anti-pak groups.
