Re: A Courageous Woman, A Courageous People/Mukhtara Mai in NY
She raised the issue in front of the world, while Musharraf was trying to pull wool over the world's eyes. How can a problem be solved when some don’t even want to acknowledge it exists?
The fact that Mukhtaran is alive is itself minor miracle. In most other cases, rape victims are forced to commit suicide to save the family 'izzat'. If not that, someone kills them. That fate has still not fully escaped Mukhtaran, and this makes her stand against jihalat even more courageous.
One can hope someone in America will take notice and force Musharraf to take concrete and real steps to combat this menace instead of the usual lip service. One can only hope.
Of course there will still be people who hate Mukhtaran because their precious izzat has been hurt. To these people, ‘izzat’ is more important than justice, and not this woman's 'izzat', but their own. Feudal thinking at its finest. It's more important that no one finds out about a crime, than the crime itself or justice.
