A Brief Summary of the Rules of Fasting

Re: A Brief Summary of the Rules of Fasting

I think LKK quoted the wrong hadeeth. There is one that says that (paraphrasing) "if you fast and dont pray, then Allah does not need your hunger"

Re: A Brief Summary of the Rules of Fasting

^ Gotcha.

But still.... this is the first time I have heard that not praying breaks the fast or a fast is not accepted...

Re: A Brief Summary of the Rules of Fasting

Umm.. I think the hadeeth is correct (havent checked) as thats what our imam quoted as well yesterday.. We need to understand its explanation though

Re: A Brief Summary of the Rules of Fasting

how many raka'ats should one offer in Taravih..I have heard the Sunnah is of 8 ..but some people say it's 20 !

Re: A Brief Summary of the Rules of Fasting

Peace,

The question raised due to our member asked 'If intentionally i miss the prayer then my fast is accepted?".

The ‘Fast’ as we aware is the forth pillars of the Islam and its mandatory on us (read post #1 Para 4 & 6). At post # 14, the hadith clearly indicates that we must refrain from all evil deeds. If a person intentionally doesn’t offers his/her prayers that act can be assumed as ‘evil deeds’ or an action of evil. Moreover, only the ‘prayers’ are the unique action in Islam which differs us from others. Fast can be observed by many other religions to, but prayers (namaaz) can’t. So what is the use of such ‘Fast’ if we don’t offers our prayers.

During the menstruation period, females are not permitted to fast nor permitted to offers their prayers. Same as those woman expecting a child, or one who is nursing a baby too are exempted.

If we read the details ‘Tafseeer’ of verses 183 to 188 of Surah Al Baqarah, the Qur’an speaks that 'The Muslim fast is not meant for self-torture. Although it is stricter than other fasts, it also provide alleviations for special circumstances. If it were merely a temporary abstention from food and drink, it would be salutary to many people, who habitually eat and drink to excess. The instincts for food, drink and sex are strong in the animal nature, and temporary restraint from all these enables the attention to the directed to higher things. This is necessary through prayers, contemplation, and acts of charity, not of the showy kind, but by seeking out those really in need. Certain standards are prescribed, but much higher standards are recommended. The verses 186 and 188, are not foreign to the subject of Ramadan, but emphasise its spiritual aspects. Here we are told of Prayers and the nearness of Allah SWT, and in 188 wee are asked not to ‘eat up’ other people’s substance.

Our Prophet Muhammad :saw2: said:

Narrated by Abu Huraira in the book ‘Fasting’ of Sahih Bukhari Hadith No. 127: “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)”

In Sahih Hadith our Prophet Muhammad :saw2: ordered a fasting person he shouldn’t involve in any fights and if somebody comes to him for fight or going to abuse him, then he must say twice “i am fasting”. Checking blood won’t break fast as far as i know.

Re: A Brief Summary of the Rules of Fasting

Peace TLK Bhai,

I coudn't find the reference of that hadith at post# 21.

Re: A Brief Summary of the Rules of Fasting

Book ‘The Book of Fasting (Kitab Al-Sawm)’ of Sahih Muslim hadith No. 2568.

Abu Huraira and Abu Sa’id (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported Allah’s Messenger :saw2: (as saying): Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, said: Fast (is exclusively) meant for Me and I would give its reward. There are two (occasions) of joy for the observer of fast. He feels joy when he breaks the fast and he is happy when he meets Allah. By Allah in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, the breath of the observer of fast is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk. A hadith like this is narrated on the authority of Abu Sinan with the same chain of transmitters (and the words are):" As he meets Allah, He rewards him, and he is happy."

Re: A Brief Summary of the Rules of Fasting

Peace Enigmatic,

8 rakat of Taraweeh mentioned as per below hadith. However, i’ll check in another hadith books if there is any info related to Taraweeh.

**Book ‘Praying at Night in Ramadaan (Taraweeh)’ of Sahih Bukhari Hadith No. 230.
****Narrated Abu Salama bin 'Abdur Rahman: that he asked 'Aisha “How was the prayer of Allah’s Apostle :saw2: in Ramadan?” She replied, “He did not pray more than eleven Rakat in Ramadan or in any other month. He used to pray four Rakat ---- let alone their beauty and length----and then he would pray four ----let alone their beauty and length ----and then he would pray three Rakat (Witr).” She added, “I asked, ‘O Allah’s Apostle:saw2:! Do you sleep before praying the Witr?’ He replied, 'O 'Aisha! My eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.”
