‘Brazil doesn’t want to develope nuclear arms’06-10-2004
BRASILIA: US Secretary of State Colin Powell,… opening a two-day visit Tuesday, said he is confident that Brazil has no intention of becoming a nuclear weapons power, but he called on Brazil to work out differences with the UN nuclear watchdog agency over inspections.
Anti, watch your words dude. Who knows what the AQ deal is all about. It will forever be shrouded in mystery.
As for Collin Powell’s remarks about Brazil, I believe its because United States has a major interest in keeping countries away from acquiring nuclear capability. It has played an important role in the establishement of major Nuclear weapon free zones through out the world and also becauseBrazil and Argentina are members of Treaty of Tlatelolco, signed in 1967 that sought to establish a Nuclear Weapon Free Zone in the Latin American region. This was when they decided to resolve their border dispute and forgo their nuclear weapons.
So, I do not think that there is any chance of these countries taking the nuclear path again. This is one of the three legitimate NWFZ in the world.
Is it not possible that the US wants an another limited (super) power in the Western hemisphere (with limited capabilities offcourse), which will keep an eye on South America while the US cocentrates in Asia?
