Victory... Isnt Dalit apathy linked to the fact that they are at the bottom rung of society and believe that even with an education opportunities do not exist for them due to discrimination...its not a justification but it is a reason...you could say the same for blacks in Brazil...they should leave their favelas and get an education and work hard but the fact is no-ones gonna give a black guy a job in Brazil so you resort to other means...Case for any poor socio-economic group in a society...
Just a question about Dalits and perceptions regarding them...This sint meant as an attack in any way...its a genuine question...arent Dalits seemed as deserving if their oppression because due to a Hindu belief in reincarnation they must have been bad in a previous life...Cos i remember a Buddhist guy sharing the same sentiment when speaking about disabled people...isnt disadvantage in rural communities sean as ascribed due to a previous life therefore there is no moving up?...
I beg to differ here. The situation of dalits is much different from that of Blacks. The caste system however hated ensured that every individual had jobs on their hands. For eg., a Brahmin used to be relegated to priestly duties, the Kshtriays to army and Vysya to business and sudras were the engineers, architects, barbers, farmers etc.
Though there was a hierarchy, there was a responsible position in society for everyone. Things went bad when the Sudras were denied educational opportunity and those privileges were restricted to the other castes. This laid for the foundation of continuous exploitation of the Dalits.
Today there are 5 million dalits in government positions and all the dalits have to do is just appear for an exam / interview and they will land up in a job. Unfortunately it is the better off dalits who continue to grab the benefits generation after generation and do not allow the other deserving people to get a chance. So today it has turned out that the developed dalits (neobuddhist dalits, christian dalits) have usurped all the benefits meant for underprivileged dalits.
Many dalits feel bitter when reminded of history. But that is the case with most people. You remind a muslim about his history and how they are today, he feels bitter about today. You ask a Hindu about his history, he has bitterness towards the mughals and the christians. These feelings are natural as they are based on a perception not necessarily based on reality, but based on the recent brain wash they had in their school, college or locality.
Finally, every civilisation or society has exploited people in some or the other form. Whether it is the british / spanish / portuguese with the black and brown slaves or the arab with their slaves or the Indians with their caste system. Countries develop and progress based on how they look into themselves and fix their problems providing a just and equitable society for its people.
