92 WC triumph anniv!

Re: 92 WC triumph anniv!

yup.. that day was unbeleiveable.. i remember giving my last exam for 5th grade, and some students had requested to the Dean to televise the game in the assembly hall.. we were surprised that she actually did.. half of the class finished the 2 hour test in 40 mins and we were all watching it, thats where my "love" of cricket started, right at the moment when Wasim Akram got those 2 wickets(of allan lamb and chris lewis)..and now i m a die heart cricket fan.. this day holds the best spot of my cricket heart :) .....lets hope i get to see one more pakistani captain holding the world cup in my lifetime (inshallah)...

Re: 92 WC triumph anniv!

Yeah, those were the days! What an unbelievable run Pakistan had after an aweful start to the World Cup. Pakistan lost Waqar Younis to injury even before the tournament began. Aamer Sohail and Saeed Anwar were both new, and Aamer was preferred over Saaed. Inzimam ul Haq had just come off of TWO back to back ODI centuries against Sri Lanka (both of them unbeaten I think) and had an ODI average of arround 100!!!! Pakistan started miserably, losing to West Indies by 10 wickets after making 220/2 or something like that. Won against Zimbabwe where Aamer Sohail had a century (he was the highest scorer in that WC in the beginning). Lost badly to England (all out for 72 I think). Lost to India after looking like easily winning it. Lost to South Africa in a rain-truncated match and this was the first match where Inzi showed his class to the world. I think he made 30+ or 40+ and the commentators couldn't help but wonder at his talent. He was spectacularly run out by a flying Jonty Rhodes. In one of the other matches he was given run-out by Indian umpire when he was at least 2 feet inside the crease. In total, Inzi was run-out 4 times during WC92. Salim Malik was caught out numerous times playing one handed shots to the cover (possibly involved in match-fixing even then).

In the end Pakistan needed to win all 3 of their remaining matches to have a CHANCE to qualify for the semis. Imran Khan made headlines when he said that he was trying to charge up Wasim Akram, telling him not to worry about no-balls and wides but just to get wickets. And then Pakistan started their winning streak, beating Australia, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. NZ was unbeaten at that point, until Pak beat them. But even that was not enough for Pak to qualify. They same day, after totally demolishing NZ, Pakistan had to switch to the Aus-WI match on the TV and pray for Aussies win. The Aussie victory meant that Pakistan qualified for the semis and WI was kicked out (Aus was already out). Wasim Akram even said that Pak players pooled together part of their match fees and wanted to send it to Australian Bruce Reid(??) a gift for bowling so well in that match and helping Pakistan qualify.
Well, the rest is history. Pakistan made in incredible comeback in the semis, with Miandad, Inzimam, and Moin guiding them to victory after losing early wickets chasing a daunting total. Nothing short of a miracle. And then there was the final that we all know about.

I remember briefly being part of the procession that welcomed the team when they came back to Lahore. Unbelievable atmosphere! Even Waqar Younis had joined his teammates at the airport even though he was not in the WC squad. Those were the days!

Re: 92 WC triumph anniv!

One of the best days of my life!!! :jhanda:

The horrified look on my indian friends’ faces was just picture perfect!

The match is till etched in my memory. Stupid Gooch clumsily dropping Imran, Rameez Raja walking off thinking he was out and then running back to the crease having realised he wasn’t, Botham’s gutted face when he was given out caught behind and Inzaman coming on and scoring 7 runs off his first 2 balls from Dermot Reeve - the first was sliced away for a boundary, the second hit the same way but stopped and 3 runs taken. The delightful expression on Wasim Akram’s face after those 2 devastating wickets of Lewis and Lamb is one of sheer joy and happiness and makes me proud to be Pakistani. The joy on their faces was reflected in every corner of Pakistan. I’ll never forget the moment Imran fittingly got the final wicket and held his arms up high, Amir Sohail doing sajdah and Mushy jumping up high in delight. All this makes me sentimental

We love you boys! All hail King Khan :jhanda:
