911 - Letter of Intent for Internship

I’m going to intern this summer. I’m hopeful I’ll get what I want but I’ve been asked to write up a letter of intent to make it official.

So, what goes into this letter? Is this the same as a personal statement? If anyone has written a letter of intent please share what’s needed, looked for, how long it should be, blah blah blah.

Anyone?

Thanks,

P.S. If it matters, the gigs are at the UN and DFAIT.

Hi hskhan,

To my knowledge, a letter of intent is not as formal as a statement of purpose. It’s much shorter – just a page usually, and is meant to accompany your résumé or CV. Furthermore, in terms of structure, I’ve seen it as a narrative highlighting the following three things:

  • your personal strengths and skillset related to the internship field and/or the host organization
  • any past experience and academic training that is relevant to the internship sought
  • how your career and academic goals will be supported by the experience of the internship.

I had written a letter of intent for an internship with the World Bank during my masters coursework. I don’t have it on my work laptop but can look for it at home if you think it might help. I’m sure there are templates available online though.

Best of Luck with your apps...

Re: 911 - Letter of Intent for Internship

Umar,

I was actually thinking of asking you directly but didn't want to be imposing.

If I've understood this right, it's essentially a page of bragging rights. I am good at....This is why i'm good.....This is how it relates to the gig.....This is why I need the gig....This is how I can help the gig....

If you can dig up your letter of intent, I'd really appreciate it. Even without it I should be fine, you've pointed me in the right direction.

Thanks.
