9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

So Ibtehal is MashaAllah 9 months 2 weeks now but she won’t hold her bottle while drinking milk. Its like she knows there is milk in it & she’ll lean forward to drink but she just won’t hold the bottle. I have tried teaching her, she held it twice but then she got frustrated & she always gets frustrated.

She can easily hold a sippy cup & even tries to hold a paper cup or plastic water bottle & actually does a better job drinking from regular cups or bottles but just wont hold the milk bottle.

Any tips on how to teach her or to get her to hold the bottle?

Also tips on how to transition from baby bottles to sippy cups? Which ones are the best in US?

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

I'm on the same boat as you except that my baby is 6 months old. He can hold the bottle very well but he just won't! :--/ He holds it for 2 mins and then starts playing with it. I have started giving him some juice in a sippy cup once a day and he's doing pretty well. Ofcourse he makes some mess and gets some juice on his clothes too but at least he's learning! I'm thinking of getting a bottle that has handles. I know Nuby has one that looks like a sippy cup. Try it if you want!

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

Oh thank you for the suggestion CA. I think I have seen those bottles with handles. Ibtehal does the same thing she will play with it if she is not hungry but just won't hold it & drink by herself.

I would say if you can start working on him now because at her 6 months appointment her ped. told me not to worry & every one would tell me that every kid has their own pace but I can so see that its not about learning how to drink but just plain old stubbornness if you may call it that she wants me to feed her.

Since a couple of days she won't even drink milk from daddy's hands.

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

my 1yo doesn't either, but I'm about to take her off the bottle.

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

my son held his own bottle close to his first bday... he just didnt wanna.. nawab ki aulaad.

dont worry bout it...

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

lol at nawab ki aulaad. I call her nawabzaadi when she does this. So he just started holding it all of a sudden or what?

Sahar I have thought about it & 3 more months but then what if she completely refuses to take milk after that. I have heard of children doing that sometimes & I wanna make sure that she has a good habit of drinking milk at least twice a day.

I was thinking that either I should enforce this holding bottle by herself or start giving her milk in sippy cups in all feeds so hopefully by her first birthday we can move to regular cups.

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

Mine is exactly the same age as yours Bint e naeem and she holds her bottle only when she wants to,and that is not very often.
She knows how to but just doesn't want to.
I have tried a few sippy cups but she does not take any.I need to get one she actually takes and doesn't think is just a toy.

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

Madam calls herself "shezadi."

She also doesn't really put ANYTHING in her mouth. We really trained her too well. I'm trying to reverse that, and sometimes she feeds herself but sometimes she really seems hurt and disturbed that we won't feed her. She will pull her hands away and shake her head no. But she will happily pick up and offer food to others.

She's the same with the sippy cup, but is will happily drink from it herself sometimes.

Bint, don't worry about the milk. Yes they should drink milk BUT as my doctor pointed out, they do not NEED it the way they used to once they are a year. So if she has a day or two of refusing to drink milk or not drinking as much when she's a year, it's okay (we had that a little bit when we transitioned to cow's milk, but now she's fine). I think the harder thing with the bottle is how easy it is to relax and drink (and be cuddled and held). They just don't get that with the cups, so I am sure they will demand it. But they will adjust (we all did :p ).

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

Oh wow. Seems like I am not alone in this. I am going to try the Nuby ones CA mentioned. If you come across anything that works chips let me know.

So there is no other straight way of telling them to hold it since they actually can.

Its cute that we have daughters of the same age :hugz:

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

So true.

Sahar your daughter is just too cute feeding food to others like that.

No wonder its about the cuddling & comfort.

She doesn't take much solids either (another issue I am thinking of opening a thread on) & in 3 months that's what she should be eating right. Just when I think I have learned all I can about being a mother. Another thing comes up.

These days no matter what she only wants me to feed her & I read a thread on babycenter & it turned out all the kids born in her month last year are drinking milk from sippy cups. It did got me thinking.

Also it'll be nice to have a break here & there.

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

I just got another Nuby sippy cup…will see how that goes…I had a variety of bottles when she was born and now I am collecting sippy cups…
As much as I want her to hold on to her bottles and cups ,I know very soon she will be independent enough and then wont be cuddling with me and falling asleep in my arms while I give her the bottle…:teary1:
I had such a hard time when she stopped breastfeeding…I missed that bonding time so much…
I will miss this too…

:frowning:

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

Awww! I feel you. No doubt about that.

There is nothing like bfing though. Its a completely beautiful experience.

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

my daughter started holding her bottle at around 12 months but whenever she is holding her bottle she ends up leaving half of the milk and does not finish it. So most of the times me or mom hold the bottle for her. I have got nuby’s and avent’s sippy cup for her but I don’t think this transition would be smooth esp when my mom thinks that it’s too early :hinna:

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

My daughter started holding her bottle at 3.5 months!! I actually thought it was normal, untill I read this thread. She's 5.5 months old now mA and has been feeding 'herself' for 2 months now. At first I would keep her in my lap while she drank her milk holding the bottle. Then I started leaving her 'alone' with the bottle and mA she would drink her bottle all by herself and still does! She just lets go of it when she's done or starts playing with it. Don't remember doing anythinh special, she started taking initiative herself :-/

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

i guess every baby is different and we have to let them grow at the pace they want to. my daughter is 8 mnths and has just recently started holdin her bottle(not the normal long one but a wide nipple bottle which is wide ofcourse so a bit difficult to hold also). i hope she continues to hold it. i m thinkin of strting sippy cup soon which has two handles.. wot do u guys suggest i shud put in it? and wot knda sippy cup shud i buy? are there varieties? which is best for transition from bottle to sippy cup (ofcourse she will continue to drink from bottle but just wanna strt her on cup)?

Re: 9 months old yet still not willing to hold her bottle

we never had the bottle .. once I left her at my ammi's place .. of course no bottle there, she could drink a bit straight from the cup, age was around 11 months, ammi fed her normal milk in a cup with a straw!! and she drank all of it .. now we went from nursing to drinking from a straw in a cup and mA she loves it. Before that I tried sippy cups but she didnt like that.
