(8) welcome to my lifee

Hi guys

Dilemma: i dont know what i like - im in 2nd year uni - doing social science after a brutal year in business (yuck) i find my interests in school is kinda fading - i forget why im in school- what i want to do with my degree, and i feel like my degree wont take me n e where - i honestly hate school.
i really hate political science which i thought i wanted to do — sometimes i think just to stick it up – but honestly its like UGHHH.
I am brown. parents are brown. Its a horrible situation. Thus, for me to drop out won’t be an option - and going into like fashioN (which i want to do) won’t be soo intriguing to parents, relatives etc.

what to do–any advice for a confuzzled person?!

p.s. if ur gonna mock me and tell me that my problems are childish - please don’t reply – this is hard for me as it is and i dont need arrogant ppl that have degrees and know what there doing in their life to put me down:)
thanks

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

well im sure noone's goin to mock you b/c believe it or not, we all were (or are) in the same boat at some point!

what uve to understand is that 10 yrs from now NOONE will remember how you switched thru 10 schools to finally stick with ur 20th career option. however, if you choose to do something that's not what you wanted to do, YOU will be the ONLY person who'll bear the consequences and live with it for the rest of ur (miserable) life (God forbid).

I would seriously advice you to change ur career and do something ure passionate about. dropping out of school shouldn't be an option to begin with! it's more like ure dropping out so you can start afresh into another program!

and im sure none of us have to explain to you why going to school is so important.. as opposed to dropping out n workin at the mall for the rest of ur life....

secondly, i don't see why pursuin fashion design would raise eyebrows in ur family - no matter how conservative.?! it is a totally recognized n hip career option.. why do you think ur family would mind?
like seriously, theres enuff brown doctors, engineers, bankers n i.t. professionals out there.. we could definitely do with a fashion designer :)

and yeah.. if this helps, im an interior designer. that's what i wanted to do.. i missed gettin into design school the first time around cuz my lazy rear-end didn't hand in my portfolio within the deadline. i waited a WHOLE yr until i could apply again. my parents were VERY supportive (alhamdolillah) but everyone else in the extended family was barkin up my tree left, right n centre.
i didn't give a rat's ass to be very honest.. and today, i can't thank Allah for giving me the courage and the perseverance to believe in myself. it's paid back ten-folds alhamdolillah :)

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

baigette, dont go for a career that teh khandaan is interested in, who gives a damn its your life not theirs.

I changed my major a couple of times because i had started in computer engineering and got into computer sciences, btu my real passion was in business world. the jalnay walay types claimed that I had flunked out of engineering and was studyign commerce, not realizing that the business school at my uni was ranked higher and more competitive than the engineering school.

listen to ppl, they may see something or know something you dont know, so dont just discount their views because they go counter to yours, but in the end evaluate your options, talk to ppl you trust and go forth and conquer.

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

i have the same problem :teary2:

but the only difference is you dont know what exactly you like, and i have a problem is with what exactly i hate :teary2:

u havent seen fashion designing. that is why you have no clue.
but if you are ready to get your hadian (bones) toor matoor then sure go for that. :crying:

but dont ruin urself with wat otherz r saying cuz then there wont be any difference between you and the machine.

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

All i'm goin to say if fashion is what fascinates you, do it. When i graduated back in the day in Computing, 2 years into my job in this field. I began to detest the work and one day i came to a realisation that is this really what i want to be doing for the next 30 or so years, heck no it wasn't. So i re-applied and attend University for another 3 years in a career in Forensics and alhumdulillah i'm so glad i did.

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

I would suggest that you get the details of Fashion design. Other then that I would really ask you to go see a career counselors and take the Myer Briggs Type indicator test. It really helps you be aware of your strengths and suggests careers that go with it. Where are you ..I meant in USA or UK. I can let you a bit more about Fashion Design if you want as I had looked into that some time ago.

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

first of all...i want to thank you allll!!!
i was going through this weird emotional rollercoaster...it gives me a lot of comfort :) so thank you!!!

The problem for me-- is i have spent an extra year after h.s. - spent a year at university in a program that i miserably failed in (everyone found out - and yada yada) --- and then i spent another year doing some bogus social sci course at a community college - with a certificate thats of no use to me --- now im back at the same university doing social sciences...and i feel like ive already wasted soooo much time in my life- Although i keep reminding myslef that school really has no time limits – people spent their entire lives finishing up their degrees – but I really don’t want to be in school much longer. I just want to work…

On top of pursuing fashion - ive never taken a fashion design course - in h.s. or anywhere- in fact when i had to take family and life class which included sewing, i did absolutely horrible. - so i am a bit hesitant, and im afriad that i may hate it :S.
- i was also always discouraged to take art classes - even tho i know i have this secretive passion for it lol. -- all i know is that i have a pretty creative side to me..regardless of waht i may want to do. i know i would probably end up killing myself if i were to work as a teacher, in an office etc.... (no offence to these professions i think its amazing that u enjoy what u do--- just not my choice :))

I realize that my choices may change...frequently as they are now…my parents are advising me to just get my degree first in political science (rather a real program) and then consider fashion/media(im thinking of that too) or watever i want to do afterwards. But my problem is RIGHT now. I am not doing well in my program - mainly because i have major studying issues --P R O C A S T I N A T I O N (sp?) -- but i dont enjoy studying politics and the history of the labour work force - bleh.

ill definitely look more into fashion design...i think its imp to get a degree -- no matter wat profession. I was hoping this was a phase - or like September blues but its like november now and im so not getting my act straight.
I've also spoken to a good friend of mine who is going through relatively the same problem -- and we may build up the courage together and face our problems by seeing a counsellor..

I've done several online career test -- and they all point towards a creative director profession -- or advertising.
so we'll see

Ask99- im acutally in Canada/ontario --> i know a few professional design schools but n e information would be really helpful.

but IA -- i guess i just need to pray and make du'a that whatever decision i make for the futureThank u soooo much for all ur advice again may Allah(SWT) guide us all to a right path JiA
gotta run so ill be back later J

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

It certainly seems like you’ve experienced significant setbacks in terms of time in your attempts to find that ideal major for yourself. Like others have already said, there’s nothing wrong with trying out a few options early in your undergraduate years, but if the trend continues well beyond your sophomore year, then it can get a little worrisome and you need to get more serious about it.

Personally, I think that beyond a certain point, the choice of a major involves a commitment that you should be ready to make. Some students are just not ready to do so and end up falling too far behind. It really doesn’t have to be all that difficult though…

You can talk to professors and students in the academic programs that you’re interested in… sit in during a few classes for courses that are representative of that program. Again, I can’t stress this enough… talk to students first to find out which courses they find the most interesting and which courses are harder to get through… you need to have an expansive basis for making your decision. You need to answer this question:

Do the courses that interest you more outweigh the ones that don’t… are the courses you like good enough to keep you engaged in the program over the duration of the program – i.e. are there opportunities to extend your experience through advanced courses in the same domain – etc.

From my own experience, I can tell you that there may be 1 out of 5 courses that you would find really engaging and you might just have to live with the other 4. This is not to say that you’ll hate the other 4, but it would take a little more motivation and commitment to get through them. In the end, an undergraduate degree is meant to instill this ability in you to accept challenges and tolerate while not losing your focus and continue to enjoy the parts that interest you. Your time post graduation in the workforce is not going to be much different.

Hopefully by taking these simple steps, you can critically evaluate your reasons, or lack thereof… in choosing the major that you are considering.

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

Bro, why the hate for Political Science/Social Science?????? I don't get it with your folks. Political Science is not a REAL program???? Where in the world did you get that from? Seriously I am pissed off. I am tired of seeing kids saying "Oh, you see, when you graduate from engineering, all doors are open" LOL the only door that's open is their mouth. I am like who said that, your parents?? haha

sorry.

but I just wanted to get that out of me. We need more and more intellectuals in our ummah, so stop saying political science is of a lower level than engineering or what not.

For you, I suggest you have a long talk about this with your parents, relatives and friends who are close to you and then your professors. Think about how you will support your parents and your future wife (inshallah). :) Then go for what you think is right!!! May Allah make it easy for you.

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

whos hating on poli sci/social sci?

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

wow i wish i could do that in h.s. ---
my networking skills r disgusting. lol --- but definitely ill start looking into that :) thanks!

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

r u in fashion – why do do u hate it?

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

Don't feel bad .... we all gone through similar situations and have asked ourselves the same depressing questions ... this is part of life, its about discovery, making mistakes and hopefully learning new things.

I may have a synical view; I see college/school as a way to learn new skills to make $$. Once you have the $$ you can enjoy other things such as fashion or whatever else. Before you decide to go into fashion, political science or whatever else, ask yourself what is the return on investment? After investing 4 or 5 years of college tuition, personal time, family sacrifices, etc. what will you get in return.

What you lack is personal motivation? You are not able to motivate yourself and in order to succeed in this competitive world you need to be able to motivate yourself even when there is negativity around you. If you have the right motivation I am certain that you can succeed in any field you want to. Ask yourself, why you are not motivated enough??

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

that is such a different outlook...and...i seriously do not have an answer as to why im not motivated enough...i used to be..
i guess i just lost it after switching my programs...now im just sorta taking everything day by day and seeing where itll take me? ... which kind of sucks cause i think with school u shud be planning ahead of what/where you want to do...
hmmm motivation...where is it?!

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

Khandani pressure and gossip is a compounding factor in why many of us have (or had) ended up the way we have (or had). The one thing I have learned in life is not to succomb to such pressures.

Baigette, if you're really suffering from the "clueless syndrome", I'd suggest taking a break from school for a year and get a job.

You may earn some money and save up for tuition, and in the meanwhile think things over from a practicality perspective. Talking to professionals may help too... Hey, you'll accumulate work experience as well and that is always good.

The only downside is that you could loose motivation to return to school, but I think that your current turn-off is much more dangerous from a long-term career development perspective.

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

i’m loosing motivation to return to school and its not even because i’m doing poorly…its because i have no interest in what i’m doing…grr and desi parents want “science robots” or something :frowning:
and i dont even know what i’m good at anymore :bummer:
see we all go through this
i dont even know what kind of a job i’m gonna get after i finish majoring in biochemistry…honestly i hate labs and anything to do with them

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

sub kuch choro...uar busines kero.>:D

Re: (8) welcome to my lifee

since you brought it this baigette....i hope you dont mind if i ask a few questions myself here :)
so how many of you are/ were science majors? what were your majors? what kind of jobs did you get or think you might get? i really need help since i dont know what i'm gonna do with biochemistry
