I believe a newer, more productive, and agreeable venue has been created in the name of millatfacebook (will not post link, please google it and find it). It will allow those who were in any way discontent with facebook's policies, to leave and join this new network designed for Muslims.

I really believe, instead of being all enraged all the time about western mindset and policies, muslims ought to be developing their own infrastructures so they're independent of western "networking" so to speak. It's a means to peaceful resolution that will lead to alternatives in almost every field.

Case in point, Pakistani avionics being developed, and with maturity in coming decades Pakistan maybe seen as a techno hub for avionics for its own fighter jets instead of relying on others. The same can be applied to social networking, mass media, etc. etc.

Where there's demand, there will always be those from within the community who can cater to it in its own flavor.

I for one, support the idea of millatfacebook, and truly believe it will allow folks to join an alternate and walk the walk, instead of just talking the talk.

but then again why should be seperate ourself from the world? im sure non-muslims wont be joining this site. Why cant we all just use facebook like the rest of the world and stop making it a big deal. For example when jahil pakistani's and some other muslim nations make pictures of bush and burn them or burn flags of american or britain what do u think those people do? SIMPLY IGNORE. So why cant be do the same? Yes nauzobillah what they did is very wrong but hey theres good and bad everywhere. We simply have to ignore it, Allah will deal with those. Just imagine how much loss market has to go through in pakistan due to the ban.

Why am I having a hard time believing that FB has apologized to the Govt of Pakistan?

I know the main reason is that it is coming from Rehman Malik and secondly I haven't found any news source which is claiming that FB has indeed apologized.

and even if they have apologized (which is a totally different dicsussion), why Pakistan? Is Pakistan the only place where Muslims live?

In my opinion it is just a face saving lie from Rehman Malik or any other Govt official.

you can't generalize from a sample of readers of a specific blog to an entire population. Talk about a deceitful news headline based on big ass sample bias. The correct headline should be "70% of ProPakistani.pk readers want permanent ban on Facebook".

to be fair, i am very surprised that facebook ended up backing down even slightly. the original group is deleted although there is now a replacement group for it with the same kind of pictures. i havent seen an apology reported anywhere else, but they havent contradicted it either.

When dealing with user generated content on global websites, there are occasions where content that is illegal in one country is not (or may even be protected) in another. For example, Nazi content is illegal in some countries, but that does not mean it should be removed entirely from Facebook. Most companies approach this issue by preventing certain content from being shown to users in the countries where it is illegal and that is our approach as well.

After reviewing the situation, including information from the Government of Pakistan that confirms Pakistani law in this area, we decided to prevent the ‘Everybody Draw Mohammed Day’ page from being viewed by users in Pakistan out of respect for local standards and customs. We have not removed the content from Facebook, although some pages may have been removed by their creators, but have only restricted access to it from certain countries out of respect for local rules. We are delighted that our users in Pakistan can now access Facebook again.
