Your theory sounds plausible but is obviously not universally applicable.

I know for sure that at least 2 players from South - Srikkanth and WV Raman did not speak a word of Hindi.

I also doubt that Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad speak much of Hindi.

A related anecdote :

I was watching this India-West Indies match at Feroz Shah Kotla many-many years ago......and this one guy from the audience goes up to the wired fence very close to where WV Raman was fielding and shouts at him..."Oye Raman...tumne chaddi pehni hai...?"...The audience in that section burst into laughter....Raman just looks back and gives an impression as if he has no idea what the commotion is about.

This is probably is a Tamilian Issue. They have refused to learn Hindi.
Srinath speaks good Hindi. I have heard him speaking Hindi. Not sure about Prasad. Guys from baglore and Huderabad usually know hindi.

Southies speaking Hindi is as funny as Northies speaking AngreJi or Bengalis speaking Bengali (!) or Punjabis speaking.

shewag actually is well known as far as his humor is concerned. things like sneaking up to umpires frm behind and taking their walkie-talkies and talking to the third umpire

Shouldn't they like, ban him for life for that?

dude its obvious he might be doin it only during drinks break n stuff...i'm sure he and the officials have atleast that much common sense :)
