Hey one more thing
These things are hard to explain
For some it seems strange... to swallow
The frontier of our minds
Is the last place we find
But maybe the first place we should go

ZIDANE!!!!! There is no better player on this planet!

Zidane!!! there's no better player on the planet!<<<<<<<<

well, I agree with that, but if you only look at his performance of this year it's not that encouraging. However, next year, during the World Cup we will get to see his true magic once again!!! (I hope)
for this year, I still think Owen has the best chance: he has won 6 trophies this year and scored a hat-trick in a very important match against the germans.

Hmm yes you are right, but if I compare the performances in all these years of those players I would definitely nominate ZIDANE.
But This Trophy should go to ALL ROUND PLAYERS and Owen is surely not a ALL ROUND PLAYER.

if there is a trophy for best player of the last 5 years, it will definitely go to Zidane.
as for ALL ROUND players, hmmmm well Owen is only a striker, I guess Raul, Totti or Beckham (or Zidane fo that matter) would be my choice.

it is rather strange to see, that very few defenders or defensive midfielders get this award, whereas they are equally important as strikers or playmakers. The last defender to win this was Mattheus, I think.

btw about Zidane, is he a muslim? I know he comes from Algeria.

Yeah you are right...I think I would give it to Beckham.

AND yes I think so...I read it 2-3 times, but that he "converted".

here are the three nominees for the FIFA Player of the Year Award: David Beckham (Man U), Raul Gonzales Blanco (R. Madrid) and Luis Figo (R.Madrid)

this award (which is considered to be less prestigious than the Ballon D'Or) will be presented to the winner on 17th Dec; the winner will be chosen by 150 coaches of the national teams.

I think these nominees are a bit strange: how come that 2 very strong contenders to take the Ballon D'Or (Owen and Totti) aren't nominated for this one?

from the Real Madrid website (this is a seperate award which has nothing to do with UEFA or FIFA):

Zinedine Zidane keeps adding awards to his brilliant personal record. This time, Real Madrid midfielder is receiving the "Onze D'or" award next Thursday November 22nd from the prestigious French periodical Onze Mondial. The award-giving ceremony will take place at the Santiago Bernabeu's royal box at 14:00 (Spanish local time) with the presence of Real Madrid President, Florentino Perez, and the Sports General Director, Jorge Valdano. Michel Platini, one of the best all-time footballers will personally give Zidane the award.
Zidane sports record is going to increase with the addition of his third "Onze D'or"
award, following 1998 and 2000's awards ready in his hands. After that, both his individual and group track record will be one of the most brilliant ones. Besides, it is the first time a Real Madrid player gets this award.
Now after this award, Zidane and Platini, the footballer that will give him the
award precisely, will be even in this respect, as both of them have been awarded
the most times. The list of footballers holding this prize goes back to 1976 when
the French magazine set up an opinion poll for its readers to vote for a player.
In addition to these three awards given by Onze Mondial magazine, Madrid number '5' has been selected as FIFA Footballer of the Year twice (1998 and 2000). The latter is an award given by the national team coaches who have
nominated Raul, Figo and Beckham for this year's prize. But probably the prize Zidane feels the most proud about is 1998 Golden Ball, the year when he led France to the achievement of the World Cup.
The UEFA award this year have also considered the French player as candidate along with four other Madrid Players: Raul, Figo (2000 winner), Roberto Carlos and Ivan Helguera.

I was kinda surprised to see Figo win the award: i sincerely expected Raul or Beckham to take it, because I think they played much better than figo
It was also surprising to see Owen finish 8th in the fifa-award!!!!!
