Re: 4th ODI ★ Pak vs Eng ★ Sept 20
ive been pissed off because im in UK and i've been reading the coverage. they've been acting as if we're najis and for all Butts lack of decorum and backfiring Im glad someone paid them back in the same coin. yeah its been their media and the ICC that were the culprits, but they and people in their camp have been atleast complicit in feeding the frenzy and enabling the media.
the thing is most annoying is how the Brits are whining and crying as if they're the victims in this scandal. oh the series has been devalued. oh how do I know if my runs/wickets mean anything. blah blah blah. cry me a river.
the real victims of this scandal are the Pakistani people and fans. we're the ones who have been betrayed. we're the ones who're heartbroken. and this on top of the floods and the terrorism and god knows what else. so, I find it difficult to feel any sympathy for the British.
Re: 4th ODI ★ Pak vs Eng ★ Sept 20
That holier than thou attitude very much evident here too. Typical ‘gutter’ reporting by The Sun
**ANGER, resentment and even a dust-up between two of the players… was this the most toxic cricket match ever played in England? **
Andrew Strauss and his troops wanted to be anywhere other than Lord’s yesterday as the fourth one-day international panned out in an ocean of bitterness.
Shopping with the missus? Yes, please. Root canal treatment at the dentist? Go on, then, even that’s better than playing against Pakistan.
The pall of corruption hung like a grim shadow over the whole, rotten occasion.
Forty-five minutes before start of play, the England team - with Strauss as their mouthpiece - issued the most trenchant statement by a sports team anyone could remember.
They were responding to the preposterous claims by Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt that England threw last Friday’s match at The Oval for “enormous amounts of money.”
Then news emerged of the fight between Jonathan Trott and Wahab Riaz while the players were warming-up at the nets at the Nursery End.
Hostility continued during the match itself with unpleasant exchanges between James Anderson and Shahid Afridi and then Umar Akmal and Trott.
The words of Strauss are worth repeating in full because they are lacerating in their fury.
He said: "We would like to express our surprise, dismay and outrage at the comments made by Mr Butt. We are deeply concerned and disappointed that our integrity as cricketers has been brought into question. We refute these allegations completely and will be working closely with the ECB to explore all legal options open to us.
"Under the circumstances, we have strong misgivings about continuing to play the last two games of the current series and urge the Pakistani team and management to distance themselves from Mr Butt’s allegations.
"We do, however, recognise our responsibilities to the game of cricket and in particular to the cricket-loving public in this country.
“We will therefore endeavour to fulfil these fixtures to the best of our ability.”
Overnight, there was doubt that England’s first XI would even fulfil the fixture - and Geoff Miller and the selectors were speaking until the early hours of yesterday morning about picking substitute players.
But Strauss’ men honoured their duty to spectators who paid up to £90 for a ticket.
ECB chairman Giles Clarke, chief executive David Collier, England head coach Andy Flower and managing director Hugh Morris were also involved in the crisis talks throughout Sunday evening.
This is what the ECB statement said: "Mr Butt’s comments were wholly irresponsible and completely without foundation.
“The ECB expresses its gratitude for the outstanding conduct of the England team this summer and will take all legal and disciplinary action which may result from Mr Butt’s comments. The Board and the team, however, are of a view it remains in the best interests of world cricket the tour should continue and it would set a dangerous precedent to call off a tour based on the misguided and inaccurate remarks made by one individual.”
Butt himself, although refusing to back down, appeared yesterday to claim that he was not saying personally that England threw last Friday’s match. He said he was simply quoting what the bookies were saying.
How the PCB chairman has access to the thoughts of illegal Asian bookmakers is a question in itself.
But repeating hearsay is no defence. If I heard a rumour in the pub about a cricketer and a donkey, it wouldn’t be in The Sun the next day.
Pakistani captain Afridi was hyperactive all day and in turbo-charged mode with the bat.
He whacked Graeme Swann for six onto the second tier of the pavilion and a spectator needed medical attention after banging his face on some scaffolding as he took evasive action.
Afridi was soon in a war of words with quick bowler Anderson and, when Umar Akmal was dropped by Trott, he made a hand motion which said: “You talk too much.”
Pakistan made 265-7 and won by 38 runs to level the series at 2-2.
And that’s the shame of it all - this was another cracking match.
Roll on tomorrow and the final one-dayer. Or, more specifically, Thursday when Pakistan fly home and we all shout: “Good riddance.”

Cricket survives Butt attack
Kamran Abbasi
Lord’s wasn’t full but it was resplendent. A healthy crowd enjoyed a perfect late summer’s evening, by the end of which you might have been excused for forgetting that international cricket was on the brink of calamity. Sensible heads in the ECB ensured that the fourth one-day international between England and Pakistan took place despite a unilateral attack by Pakistan’s bumbling chairman, Mr Ijaz Butt.
Nerves were fraught following a night of anger in the England camp and bewilderment in Pakistan’s. The tension even spilled over into a pre-match clash between Jonathan Trott and Wahab Riaz, and it was still etched on the furrowed brow of Andrew Strauss at the post-match press conference and the perspiring forehead of Pakistan’s coach Waqar Younis.
Waqar, it seems, has become Pakistan’s one-man crisis management team. I’m not sure these delicate media situations come naturally to him but he has done admirably enough in fending off hostile questions, at least attempting to focus on cricket instead of fanning the flames of controversy. He described England as a great venue to tour and relations between the teams as superb. Although the latter statement might have been stretching the bounds of credulity, Waqar has always had affection for cricket in England despite the controversies.
He believes his squad composed of the young and the recalled deserves praise for its spirited performances in the one-day series, especially in light of the storm swirling around them and friendly fire striking amidships.
This series, however, is unlikely to be remembered for its cricket unless in relation to allegations of fixing of some variety. The 22 players made a noble attempt to reconnect supporters with the fascination of a hard-fought contest—and the crowd responded. The surreal mood of the morning was replaced by uncharacteristic buzz of excitement as England chased victory under lights.
For what it’s worth Pakistan have begun to excel again at defending competitive total. With Shoaib Akhtar leading the line and Umar Gul smashing stumps, the last two internationals have been a throwback to the way Pakistan used to go about their business more than a decade ago. Even Razzaq’s blitzkrieg in the last two overs was an echo of past adventures.
There was also fight here from Shahid Afridi’s boys, a determination to show the world what they can do. How long it lasts is anybody’s guess but Pakistan have the momentum going into the final match of the series. England, meanwhile, were shell shocked, first by Butt’s unbecoming accusations and then by the passion of Pakistan’s fight back.
Yet all the players, English and Pakistani, must take credit for playing out an enthralling contest in probably the most controversial environment in the history of one-day internationals. By the finish there was renewed hope that the spirit of cricket lives on. The fumblings of the ICC and the damage caused by Pakistan’s cricket chairman might yet be contained. Pakistan’s players celebrated victory as if they had won back their souls from the devil.
The evening at Lord’s was a reminder that the fascination of cricket lies in the battle between national heroes and the interplay of that intense contest with the emotions of an enthusiastic crowd. These magic ingredients will live on when the mistakes of the ICC and the stupidity of Mr Butt are consigned to the landfill of history. Match-fixing allegations in its various guises may be harder to shake. After all, it was prevalent on English fields in cricket’s earliest days.
