4th ODI: Pak vs Australia, Perth, Jan 29, 2010

Mohammad Aamer expected to sit out, which is a shame because Perth is traditionally Australia’s fastest and bounciest wicket. Leaving out one spinner and playing Rao Iftikhar won’t be a bad option. Rao’s a pretty decent bowler with tight line and length and will get help on a bouncy wicket.

Good news for Pakistan is that Watson and Bollinger are being rested. The bad news is that but Mitchell Johnson is playing. No respite for Pakistan. Aasman se gira, khajoor main atka!

Despite the fact that history will be against us (at Perth), I am expecting Pakistan to put up a fight. The last ODI (at Adelaide) was the best one Pakistan has played so far, where lower order batting kept the match interesting until late in their innings. I expect Umar Akmal, Afridi, Rana to learn a lesson from this… never give up until the last over.

Commendable performances from Afridi, Umar Akmal, Fawad Alam, and Rana Naved in the last game. This was the best I’ve seen Afridi bat.. a very responsible, very mature innings. Fawad Alam was also great, especially in his partnership with Umar Akmal.

Yousuf should reconsider his habit of bowling Asif for eight straight overs at the start? Granted that Asif might not be the best bowler to bowl the death overs, but given the way Gul has been bowling, there’s no harm in trying Asif. Perth wicket will suit Asif too.

News from the Ground:
Perth: The WACA has always carried the tag of being called the fastest wicket in the world but over the years the batsmen seem to have worked out the conditions well, so a number of high scoring encounters have been witnessed in the recent past in both Tests and ODIs. With the character of the wicket changing gradually over the years, the batsmen have also adjusted themselves accordingly, so we should expect a high scoring encounter.

Team News:
**Pakistan: The Pakistani camp at the moment resembles a city in ruins, recovering from the shock of the IPL snub and the humiliation at the hands of the Aussies. The blame game has begun and allegations are flying thick and fast against the captain and the coach. If the word ‘divided’ had illustrated with a practical example, the Pakistan side would prove to be the perfect candidate. While the debate rages on whether the PCB did the right thing by fuelling the rumors that the captaincy would be changed after the ODI series, Afridi - the vice-captain on tour and reportedly the next captain-in-waiting - has come out with claims that the team is a divided entity with players playing for a place in the side rather than as a unit.
Younis Khan’s return to the ODI fold, which was seen as the best way forward for the team, has suddenly backfired. His form has been woeful to say the least, and his presence in the field hasn’t exactly inspired much confidence either. With Yousuf wilting under the pressure of captaincy, the team is suddenly lacking the depth which everyone was talking about prior to the start of the series. Mohammad Aamer, who has been their go-to man in the series with the ball, is ruled out in all probability with a groin injury. The onus once again lies on the out of form Umar Gul and the dependable Mohammad Asif. The batting department hasn’t lived upto expectations either, except for Salman Butt and Afridi to a certain extent. The Akmal brothers have flattered to deceive, putting up some insipid performances with the bat, and will be looking to redeem themselves in the remaining 2 matches to bring some respectability to what has been a disastrous tour so far.
Australia: Whatever the Aussies touch at the moment seems to be turning into gold. They just can’t seem to put a foot wrong. The balance which the team looked to have lost has suddenly been replenished. With Watson firing at the top of the order consistently, and also chipping in with handy spells with the ball, the focus has suddenly shifted on the likes of James Hopes, who would be replacing Watson for the Perth double header. The all-rounder who has been out of favour for quite a while now, will be looking to reinforce his position in the team with a good display with both bat and ball. Shaun Marsh looks to have got back his rhythm at the top level once again, with some decent outings in the 3 matches so far.
With Ryan Harris chipping in with a match-winning spell in the absence of Siddle, a healthy competition is brewing for the remaining 2 slots with Johnson almost certain to walk in after a well deserved break. Bollinger, who has played non stop since the Champions League in October has been given a much needed break. On current form, one should back the Australians to whitewash the Pakistan team, but Pakistan have always carried the reputation as being ‘unpredictable’, and that would be the only thing that the Australians have to be wary of.
Stats and Trivia:
If history is anything to go by, then Pakistan must surely be grinning from ear to ear after reading this. These 2 teams have played 4 ODIs at Perth, with Pakistan winning on all 4 occasions. :yahoo: WILL THE REPEAT IT :hmmm: as right now they are repeating the histoy in overall series;

i is 2 catches away from reaching the landmark of 100 catches in ODIs.

Aussies 2 over 2 runs ... is it a dream ;)

Re: 4th ODI: Pak vs Australia, Perth, Jan 29, 2010

Bowler's dilemma: because of the bounce, good-length balls go over the stumps. If the bowler tries to compensate by pitching it fuller, it becomes a half-volley.
