I think what Pakistan will do is open with Farhat and Butt, and move Akmal down the order to replace Afridi. Sami will probably come in and replace Rana. Arshad for supersub.

I think Pakistani bowlers also need to do their home work against left handed batsmen. Like Flintoff did against Gilchrist. They (pak bowlers) don't have good record against left handers. And i think Rana sahib need a rest to re-think his bowling strategy.

PCB chief backs decision to give Shoaib rest

LAHORE: Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Shaharyar Khan said on Monday that the Pakistan team management had taken the correct decision in allowing fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar to take rest to recover from his ankle injury which if not treated properly threatened his selection for the tours of Sri Lanka and England.

“Shoaib does have a problem with his ankle and it needs to be treated and rested properly so that he is available for the coming tours. I know he was keen to play in the ODI series against India but was advised to take rest,” he told this correspondent.

"Doctors have advised him four to six weeks rest for his injury to heal completely,’ Shaharyar stated. Shoaib was on Sunday night released from the Pakistan squad and has been replaced by pacer Mohammad Sami for the last two one-dayers in Multan and Karachi.

“He has been released so that he can go and take rest. We are satisfied with the treatment he is getting right now,” Shaharyar said. Sami was to join the squad on Monday night after playing for his department, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in a Patron’s Cup match in Pindi.

Because of the circumstances leading to the exit of Shoaib from the team, all sorts of conspiracy theories are abounding on whether a new problem has cropped up between him and the team management, particularly coach Bob Woolmer.

And the team management has itself to blame for creating such circumstances. For one on Sunday when Shoaib bowled in the nets apparently as a fitness test after which he was declared unfit for the last two games, neither Woolmer nor the support team could be seen around raising the question who supervised Shoaib’s fitness test. Secondly, there is confirmed word that Woolmer is not happy with Shoaib’s reluctance to reduce his run-up in ODIs.

Thirdly, according to the source on February 9, Shoaib himself gave an interview to an Indian channel to which he is contracted for the series, saying he would be playing the second match in Rawalpindi on the 11th after missing the first match for which he was rested.

The same day Inzamam himself a day earlier had told reporters Shoaib would play in Pindi. But next morning Inzamam announced at a press conference he was not playing on the advice of the physiotherapist because of his ankle problem. Interestingly, when the channel then contacted Shoaib to inform him what Inzamam had said and that he would’ve to record new sound bites before the match, the fast bowler was apparently surprised to learn about the announcement.

While in reality there might be nothing wrong between Shoaib and the team management as he left the stadium with Inzamam and Mushtaq Ahmed but clearly the management needs to learn the basics about public relations and media handling.

I would not play Rana for the 4th ODI. Indian bats seems to have done some home work on him and besides he himself is bit off color. His cronic problem is his freak’in ‘No-Balls’ It breaks the tempo of the game and I don’t seems to understand his ‘Fast ball’ that he bowls with his head way down squeezing every bit of energy his rear can handle, and the ball is usually way to short and out side the off stump gets 'regulation treatment. But, what does he expects from such deliveries?

I totally agree with you! Even in 5th ODI. He need to sit down and watch videos of wasim akram and aussie bowlers to learn how to bowl in the pressure situations. I don’t understand why paki bowlers forgot yorkers. Wasim akram and waqar Younis usually used to bowl yorkers on the “death”. But except shoaib i don’t see any paki bowler making proper use of it.

^Actually Rana used to ball good yorkers, atleast much better than Razzaq and Sami. I saw this when he went to Australia but now he seems to have lost it.

Yes it might be. But i dno't understand what he tries to prove with short pitch deliveries especially knowing his pace. Ok you can afford a surprise bouncer when a batsman is not expecting.

And we need a fifth bowler.

Well, if the current crop of bowlers have failed to reduce and thump the Indian batters so far in the series (save the first ODI), what will be the use of bringing in another bowler, who can neither bat nor field in a decent manner (in the case of Danish)?

I would rather go for the extra batsman, once again, considering the condition of the pitches.

Everything looks good on paper. Even bhatija Sami, with his million-dollar modern-day hairstyle, seems to bring in the sheer pace which, for some reason, some people think we are lacking. On the other hand, I believe we have already given him enough chances numerous times, and, as statistics indicate, he has failed to produce a quality spell in almost each of those opportunities presented to him. It is now time we move on to somebody else, someone waiting in the shadows ready to make his name in the International market.

By the way, i remember there used to be a real quik fast bowler, if i remeber correctly his name was Zahid, he played a few matches before Akhtar came, but he totally disappeared!

please correct me if I'm wrong. I believe Akmal scored all of his ODI centuries when he opened. He is not a big hitter but a solid ground stroke player and he is more effective inside the first 10 overs and the power plays. I just don't see Akmal hitting for 4's and sixes when the field is spread out. So it will be a waste to make him bat down the order.(assuming there is no freak collapse)
