4th Degree Tear ?

I gave birth to my daughter on the 17th, labor was long and tough, babies position was sideways which resulted in a forceps delivery that caused a 4th degree tear.. I am not in extreme pain anymore but am terrified of the long term damage this may have caused, anyone have a 4th degree tear that may have some advice? I wish I didn’t refuse the decision for a c-section :frowning:

My son was born with the help of forcep too..I had a huge tear as well as huge blood loss. You’ll be fine. It will heal in no time. It was very painful initially, specially using the bathroom was ekkkk a painful painful thing. I did lots of sitz bath. Use the pain numbing ointment the hospital provides you. Stitches take few weeks to heal but you’ll be fine. Just keep the stitches dry. It was a very different recovery from my daughter’s delivery who was born without assisted delivery. So yeah painful, but it will pass too. Another gift from our babies… Lol

Re: 4th Degree Tear ?

Missyy don't beat yourself up about what happened. It is very difficult to make decisions on the spot during childbirth. Please do make sure to go for regular checkups to make sure everything is healing well. Congratulations on your baby.

Re: 4th Degree Tear ?

I had a bad cervical tear with my delivery of my twins. I was being prepped for a double csection, but Baby A decided he didn't want to wait and I went from being 4 cm's dilated to him being born in 10 minutes, with him head down tearing through my cervix. I had to get internal stitches and then had an emergency c section to get Baby B out because of his position they didn't want to risk waiting for him to come vaginally. I healed up quite alright and at my 8 week follow up I was back to normal and pain free. I didn't have anymore kids after my twins so I can't comment on the effects a 4th degree tear will have on subsequent deliveries, but personally I've never heard of any issues with anyone I know who had bad tears.

What has your doctor said?

Re: 4th Degree Tear ?

Thanks for them images ladies. I will prolly adopt now. :crying:

Re: 4th Degree Tear ?

I had no experiences as such to share on this topic. But just want to tell you to not stress yourself out thinking about long term damage. You just had baby and you already have alot to take care of including yourself. Allah sub khair karey ga trust Him !

Re: 4th Degree Tear ?

I tore very badly with baby number 1, was told not to drive for 6 weeks. No issues at all in that way with baby number 2.

Re: 4th Degree Tear ?

I don't have any personal experience with this. But someone I know had a horrible (4th degree) tear. She was referred to a physio to help with recovery.
Speak to your doctor if she hasn't referred to you a physio yet.

Re: 4th Degree Tear ?

Thanks everyone ... I'm not worried about the pain or anything temporary, some of the long term damage can be something like not being able to control my bowels which scares the hell out of me ... I know for the future I will most likely have sections as they are afraid I may go through the same problem again, I was just not dilating, after 36 hours of labor I was fully dilated but my daughter was sideways so they had to fix her position with the forceps which caused the tear. I felt like I was in labor for so long I just didn't want to have a section after going through all of that, I had a fever and infection that caused my baby girl to have an infection and was stuck in the hospital for a week as she was on antibiotics. It was all such a hell!!! I will be going to physio after 10 - 12 weeks, and have a 6 week followup appointment, just so scared!!

Ok .. From my own experience, first delivery is always harder. My first born refused to come out no matter how hard I tried, so the doctor had to use forceps to pull him.out which left me with severe cut, stitches and a harder recovery. My daughter was a breeze compared to that. Every pregnancy, every delivery us different. Just because your experience was a little tough this time doesn't mean you'll have to go through it again.
My sil's first born was sideways too, and the doctos had to use vacuum. Her experience was horrible too. Second baby was born in few pushes.
I think anytime they use forceps or vacuum you are bound to have large tear... Look at the size of that thing... Lol
I know right now you feel this way but come back revisit this thread in a month or so or when your stitches are healed. I have been through a forcep delivery so I can speak from experience, once healed everything will be back to normal and hopefully second time will not be as hard.

Oh and I also ended up with fever because of prolonged labor and my son in nicu but my doctor plained out refused c section because she said there is no way this baby won't come out naturally... Even if it meant using forceps.
Unless the doctor told you, you will have difficulties with bowel control, you gave nothing to worry about it. That will take time and you will feel a huge difference too.
Also, are you in the US?? With assisted deliveries a lot depends on the doctor using forceps or vacuum etc too. How good they are using it.

Re: 4th Degree Tear ?

make sure you do the physio diligently. I felt like a wreck for a long time after my emergency section. I had terrible flashbacks of the experience. The lovely ladies on here reassured me that it would get better. A year out now I feel much much better. You have been through a very traumatic experience. Give it time. IA you will be feeling better soon.

RV if I could have someone else have my kids I so totally would. Childbirth was a harrowing experience for me.

Re: 4th Degree Tear ?

In a few months, you'll be speaking a different language Inshallah.

Wishing you a fast and healthy recovery!
