South Korean police are hunting 42 Pakistanis and one Chinese who slipped away from an international taekwondo tournament, increasing a growing army of restless illegal immigrants.

The Pakistanis failed to return to the World Taekwondo Festival in Chungwon, 80kms south of Seoul, after going out for a meal on Tuesday, police said. The 18-year-old Chinese man vanished the same day.

“Their belongings were left behind in their lodgings, prompting us to believe they have come here to seek illegal jobs,” a police official said. “Their visas allow them to stay for three months. But they will face deportation if they work illegally here,” he said.

Taekwondo is South Korea’s national sport and made its debut as a full sport at the Sydney Olympics in September. International sporting events in rich countries have become a popular way for nationals from poorer countries to get illegal jobs.-AFP
