40 killed in Waziristan clashes; Musharraf issues 500th empty threat

What happened to Musharraf’s threats to remove all foreigners from the tribal areas? Once again, either empty threats or deliberate lies.

We should either hand over FATA to Afghanistan/NATO/US or stop BSing the world. Tribal areas are a Taliban and Al Qaeda stronghold. And what is wrong with these jihadis? They can’t even stop from killing their own brethren.

Musharraf has only emboldened them with this “peace deal” and with such low credibility, will Balochis even listen to him?

40 killed in Waziristan clashes

  • Death toll on the rise as fighting continues

By Zakir Hassnain

PESHAWAR: More than 40 people were killed and several wounded in clashes between local and foreign militants on Tuesday in the Azam Warsak and Kaloosha areas, west of Wana in South Waziristan, said officials in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Army Spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad could not give an exact figure for the death toll, saying, “The death toll has reached over 40 … this is what I have at the moment. ”

A tribal source said the militants were still fighting.

The authorities said the clashes began at around 3am, and the majority of the dead were foreigners, mainly Uzbeks.

Locals said that among the dead were four children who were caught in the crossfire. AFP reported that 27 children had also been injured. They said that injured people had been shifted to Wana for treatment.

The reason for Tuesday’s clashes was reported to be differences between local tribesmen and foreign militants over the law and order situation. Both blamed each other for the increasing crime rates and deaths in the area.

Agencies add: AFP quoted security officials as saying that heavy exchanges of rocket and mortar fire were made for a second day around Kaloosha, in clashes between pro-government tribesmen and Uzbek militants. AFP said the fighting started after ex-Taliban commander Mullah Nazir, who backs President Pervez Musharraf’s moves to expel foreign fighters, ordered followers of Uzbek militant Tahir Yuldashev to disarm.

Security officials say Yuldashev, the head of a group called the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, had links to Osama Bin Laden.

The officials said that 33 of Yuldashev’s supporters were killed and 22 detained.

Army spokesman Arshad said the military did not intend to step in.

However, Reuters quoted an intelligence official as saying that the latest clashes were not a simple conflict between pro-and anti-government forces. He said the fighting broke out on Monday over the killing of an unidentified Arab with suspected links to Al Qaeda, who was an ally of local tribesmen led by Nazir.

The local militants blamed the death on the Uzbeks, triggering a gunbattle in Kaloosha. Reuters reported that almost 50 people had been killed.

Musharraf tells militants to surrender

  • President opens Gwadar Port
  • Asks people to vote for his associates

GWADAR: President General Pervez Musharraf warned militants on Tuesday that they should lay down their arms, otherwise “they will be eliminated and allowed to exist no more”.

“Where does decency stand on the way to blowing up gas pipelines and railway tracks? These elements are opposed to development and want their hegemony to prevail. I warn them to surrender, otherwise they will be eliminated and they will not be allowed to exist any more … these miscreants are minimal in number, and we will deal with them. If they want to fight, I know (how) to fight more than them,” said Musharraf while inaugurating the Gwadar deep-sea port here on Tuesday. Port operations began with the unloading of cargo from three ships.

He said that 2007 would be election year, and called on people to reject extremists, and “vote for my associates … if they stay, there will be development”.

About the suspended chief justice, the president said it was a constitutional and legal matter, and the Supreme Judicial Council would be “free” to make any decision. “It will be acceptable to us whatever decision it makes. However, certain elements are trying to politicise this issue. I will counter them with the might of the masses,” he added. He said the Gwadar Port would serve as a trade corridor for Central Asia, China and the Gulf.

He said the 950-kilometre Gwadar-Turbat-Khizdar-Ratto Dher road would be completed within two-and-a-half years. Musharraf said that the foundation stone for Somiani Port would be laid this year. online

Re: 40 killed in Waziristan clashes; Musharraf issues 500th empty threat

I was listening to BBC Urdu service yeserday on my way from work to home and all what i heard was SHOCKING.

They were speaking to Raheemullah and another reporter who said that over the past few months many people have been slowly moving from different areas of Punjab into the tribal area, some say that their number is in thousands. And now it is these people and foreigners who have differences and are fighting with each other.

Re: 40 killed in Waziristan clashes; Musharraf issues 500th empty threat

What really sucks is that no matter who wins, Pakistan still loses...
But question for Kekashan, what exactly is Pakistan supposed to do?

Re: 40 killed in Waziristan clashes; Musharraf issues 500th empty threat

Mush is doing everything un-Islamic. He should form a committee comprising of people who have lot of experience in the region and who are good negotiators- that way there'll be a let down in the violence in the region.

Re: 40 killed in Waziristan clashes; Musharraf issues 500th empty threat

When the government launches an offensive to root them out, people go haywire against the government that they are killing and slaughtering innocent people, now they are empty threats for not intervening.

Re: 40 killed in Waziristan clashes; Musharraf issues 500th empty threat

not only that when security forces attack then its the whole hue and cry of oh they butchered innocent people and children and all that.

now when these morons go and kill each other and in the process kill children, there is not a squeek from anyone.

True.

Re: 40 killed in Waziristan clashes; Musharraf issues 500th empty threat

Pakistani troops have entered the battle on the tribal side, deploying heavy artillery to support the tribal warriors. Interestingly, local Taliban are siding with the tribes against the Al-Qaeda militants, showing the government strategy seems to be working.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,21425195-2703,00.html

With clashes entering the third day and hundreds fleeing villages in the Azam Warzak area near the administrative hub of Wana, in South Waziristan, officials in Islamabad estimated that more than 100 fighters, most of them from Uzbekistan, had been killed.
They said the fighting suggested that for the first time tribesmen are actively seeking to expel foreign militants from an area crucial to coalition forces in Afghanistan and the global war on terrorism. Islamabad last year concluded controversial peace pacts with tribal militants in South and North Waziristan that, it says, are aimed precisely at achieving this.

The fighting started on Sunday after a former Taliban commander, Mullah Nazir, who backs President Pervez Musharraf’s aim to expel foreign fighters, ordered followers of Uzbek militant Tahir Yuldashev to disarm.

Yuldashev, a confidant of bin Laden sentenced to death for bombings in Tashkent, resisted the order and fierce fighting erupted. More than half the deaths have occurred since Tuesday after Nazir gave the Uzbeks a deadline to leave the area.

**Pakistani troops based at Wana last night joined the battle and were firing heavy artillery at the Uzbek positions.

At the same time, tribal militants, including local Taliban supporters, overran a jail run by the Uzbeks and freed inmates. **

Re: 40 killed in Waziristan clashes; Musharraf issues 500th empty threat

And do you all know how the fighting started? The Uzbeks killed an Arab member of Al Qaida who was aligned with local Taliban.

Goes to show that not even jihadi indoctrination can control ethnic feuds.

Wana militants vow to fight in Afghanistan

WANA: Tribal militants praised by the government for a bloody assault on foreign fighters in Pakistan said on Monday they would continue to go to Afghanistan to fight foreign forces.

The government hailed the last week’s bloodletting in South Waziristan as a sign that local tribes would evict foreign militants without the involvement of Pakistani forces. A spokesman for the Pakistani military described them as “patriots”.

However, the tribal militia told reporters that they had not turned against the foreigners for the government’s sake.

“We will continue our jihad (in Afghanistan) if that is against America, the Russians, British or India as long as we have souls in our bodies,” Haji Sharif, an aide to to Maulvi Nazir, told reporters in Wana.

Nazir’s representatives escorted reporters to the area, where sympathies for the Taliban run high and which is generally off-limits to outside journalists. Sharif said “Our activities across the border have been affected by our crisis with the Uzbeks. We have enemies in our home,” he said. ap
