I think your reading to much into it.

This is more light hearted chatter, then an actual serious critique of the US.

not really. look at the website. the list was prepared by crackpots preparing for some kind of apocalypse. it’s not serious because it’s just very low quality work, not because it isn’t trying to be.

That being said, there is something to be embarrassed of and ripe for criticism. I mean, the most obese, highest incarceration rate, education at the Primary to high school level, these things are from what I have heard, pretty abysmal in comparison to other industrialized nations. Not to mention the Health Care system in the US, which although not mentioned, is pretty pathetic.

there is plenty of room for improvement in many areas. as for healthcare, US healthcare is by far the best in the world by a large margin. the problem is inadequate coverage. negotiating that trade-off is extremely complicated given the particular evolution of the healthcare system in the US.

And I do think elections are too expensive, and could be streamlined. Isnt election finance reform a good thing?

that’s fine but is this really a point of embarrassment? that in our thriving secular liberal democracy, elections cost too much?

i wonder if Press TV (the farcical iranian rag that cited this list) thinks costly elections are more embarrassing than having blatantly rigged elections and being run by a tyrannical ayatollah cult.
