Re: 3rd Test - Eng vs Pak - Leeds, 4th-8th Aug.

Am I the only one that's horrified when someone suggests Afridi as a Test opener? I wouldn't dream it even when he's in form. How can a Test follower ever suggest this. Does occupancy of the crease and building partnerships mean anything to you? I hope such people are just new to Test Cricket.

didnt he score century on test debut?

Re: 3rd Test - Eng vs Pak - Leeds, 4th-8th Aug.

^^ Does it matter?

For a test opener, I'd prefer a performance of 40 runs in 100 balls with 100 minutes of occupancy, than a century in 40 balls with an occupancy of 40 minutes. In test matches, the ideal score is not 250-300 as is in the case of ODIs. You need to score much more than that, and you want your openers to stick around, paly out the new ball, "take the sting out of the bowling attack," and prime the situation for other batsmen to cash in and score big.

Afridi doesnt' fit that role, especially when you know that he's NOT going to score a century every time he comes out and the most we can expect for him is an occupancy of 5-15 overs.

When you judge a player for a role, don't judge him by his best performance in that role, but by his average performance in his role.

We are having a top order instigated collapse problem. Afridi was never a solution to fixing a collapse problem anywhere in your order :)

Re: 3rd Test - Eng vs Pak - Leeds, 4th-8th Aug.

in that innings wasn't his s/r way under 100

Re: 3rd Test - Eng vs Pak - Leeds, 4th-8th Aug.

So far it seems that half cooked eggs are the players to look for; Shoaib Malik is the prime example(thanks to coach favoritism), apart from that Afrid and Razzaq(I call him a geniune all-rounder) don't get full attention as required for an all-rounder.

so far if you look at Afridi's performance (bat & ball), it would be wise to ditch him for a specialist bowler Shahid Nazir or Sami ullah Niazi will do, along with Gul and Sami.

Honestly you dont need a batting line up till 8/9 in the test matches, certain spots shold be designated to so called specialist players (ball or bat)

I would hope to see this team play in the 3rd test match;

1) Tauffeq Umer (If Fahat is fit then let him play through out the whole series)
2) Salman Butt
3) Younis Khan
4) Mohammed Yousef
5) Inzimam ul Haq
6) Abdul Razzaq
7) Kamran Akmal
8) Mohd Sami
9) Sami ullah Niaz
10) Umer Gul
11) Danish Kaneria
12) Shahid Nazir

Pakistani openers (Butt, Farhat, Malik(so called best option as a opener by coach) and Tauffeq) all are okay openers, you need to vest more trust in them Pick a pair whether that be Butt and Malik/ Farhat and Malik or Farhat and Butt or Tauffeq with any combination, I say give them atleast 15 test together (regardless of their failures) I am sure they will do well.

Re: 3rd Test - Eng vs Pak - Leeds, 4th-8th Aug.

Sir Dig, no one is advocating Afridi as the solution to our opening problems. We have had that problem for 5 years now and I doubt we will find the solution in a few days.

The only reason that can justify Afridi opening, is so that he can still stay in the team. That way we can play an extra bowler as well as have the leg spin of Afridi at hand. Honestly, he can't do any worse than "first over Butt" or "flash, drop and Farhat". And who knows, if it turns out to be his day anything can happen.

It's different from sending Akmal up the order because Akmal contributes consistently down the order. Sadly, these days the same cannot be said for Afridi.

Re: 3rd Test - Eng vs Pak - Leeds, 4th-8th Aug.

Although I still don't agree with it, your argument ( or at least the way you described it) seems a valid option that merits some thought and discussion. Let's see if Bob and Inzi try this option.

I think accomodating Afridi this way, for a match or two, might have been a viable option had we not been suffering opening problems. In the absence of current problems, loss of Afridi's wicket early in the innings would have seemed acceptable and wouldn't put extra pressure on the middle order batsmen. But given that we have a well advertised opening problem, the loss of his wicket is going to to cause depression in the dressing room ("oh there we go again") and will prvoide a psychological boost to opposition bowlers.

Re: 3rd Test - Eng vs Pak - Leeds, 4th-8th Aug.

I want Afridi as an opener.

I am new to Test Cricket.

What did Aussiecricketer sprinkle on you:halo:

Re: 3rd Test - Eng vs Pak - Leeds, 4th-8th Aug.

I'd rather see Taufeeq Umar and Afridi than Taufeeq Umar and Salman Butt.

I'm not a huge fan of Afridi at the moment, but his bowling has been relatively effective, so it wouldn't make sense to exclude him. If anyone needs to be replaced, I would say it should be Mohammad Sami because he has been very disappointing in the past two series.

We might as well test out Niazi or Nazir... or even Arafat... I mean, what do we have to lose? Can they really perform worse than Sami?

Not the repeated bans, I can tell you that much.
