Youngster Khalid Latif also inducted in Faisalabad one-dayer squad

KARACHI: Pakistan are looking towards their discarded batsman Yasir Hameed to deliver in the third one-dayer against South Africa in Faisalabad tomorrow (Tuesday) after the continuous failure of their openers in recent times.

‘The News’ has learnt through well-placed sources that Pakistan have decided to replace Imran Nazir, who misfired in Lahore yet again on Saturday, with Yasir Hameed. The Peshawar-born batsman will open the innings for the hosts in Faisalabad with wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal.

The national selectors have also decided to induct rookie opening batsman Khalid Latif in the one-day squad ahead of tomorrow’s game. The Karachi-based player comes in the squad as a substitute opener.

All-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, who was dropped from the squad after flopping in the opening one-day game in Lahore on October 18 has been released from the squad. Hafeez opened the innings in the first one-dayer and fell for just six. He also failed to impress much in the two-match Test series earlier this month and was dropped from the Lahore Test after failing in the opening match in Karachi.

Lack of good opening stands has become a chronic problem for Pakistan in both the Test and one-day arena in recent years. So bad is the record of Pakistani opening batsmen like vice-captain Salman Butt, Imran Nazir and Mohammad Hafeez that recently Pakistan’s prolific batsman Mohammad Yousuf pointed out that the national team has not been blessed with a reliable opener since the exit of Saeed Anwar. He also said that Pakistan have learnt to live with this handicap.

However, national selectors are now trying to look beyond the existing lot of openers, who have the experience of playing international cricket for Pakistan. The decision to draft the 21-year-old Khalid Latif in the one-day squad is a sign that the selectors are now willing to try out some younger batsmen at the top of the order.

It is unlikely that Khalid will be asked to play any role in the current ODI series but the young batsman will certainly get a chance to show his worth in a five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe to be played in Pakistan later this year.

Khalid, who led Pakistan to a title-winning triumph in the 2004 Youth World Cup in Bangladesh, has a superb one-day record at the domestic level having scored 840 runs in 21 games at an average of almost 50 with two centuries under his belt at a strike rate of 80.92.

Khalid’s first-class record, however, is not as impressive as he has scored 1603 runs from 33 matches at an average of 27.63.

The Karachi-born player impressed the national selectors and Pakistan team management during a series of practice games held this summer in preparation for last month’s World Twenty20 championship in South Africa.

While Khalid may still be a few games away from making his international debut, it was only a matter of time that Yasir returned to the line-up to give some stability to Pakistan’s brittle top order.

The 29-year-old Yasir has scored 1999 runs from 53 ODI appearances at an average of 38.44 with three centuries and 12 fifties. His Test stats are not bad either, having scored 1292 runs from 20 Tests at 35.88 though he hasn’t scored a century in his last 19 Tests.

On his debut in August 2003, Yasir stamped his presence in international cricket with two Test centuries — against Bangladesh at Karachi — becoming only the second player to achieve that feat.

He will be a part of the playing line-up in tomorrow’s game instead of Imran Nazir, who has once again failed to captilise on a series of chances he has received this year. Imran, 25, scored 16 in the first ODI and followed that knock with a just two in the second one-dayer. Now it seems quite unlikely that the selectors will show any faith in him for next month’s five-match ODI series against India.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Not a good idea to drop Imran Nazir. When he gets going he takes the game away from the opposition. Yasir Hameed is a slow player and we need someone who can take advantage of the powerplay rule.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

^ I rather have someone who will stay at the wicket for a while than someone who will make quick 20 runs and play stupid shot to get out.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

^^ +1

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

nazir makin 50 in dis or next match

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Nazir and Hafeez both will not play in 3rd ODI :)

This team will play in the 3rd ODI

Yasir Hameed
Kamran Akmal
Younis Khan
Mohammad Yousuf
Shoiab Malik
Shahid Afridi
Misbah ul Haq
Sohail Tanvir
Abdul Rahman
Ifekhar Rao
Umer Gul

In my opinion Shahid Afridi should play at least on number 6 position.
Misbah ul Haq can hit hard in lower numbers.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Misbah shud bat before Afridi, he is a good batsman and needs to play more overs.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

^ definetly agree with that. Misbah should be coming up the order.

But I don't agree with Yasir Hameed coming in the squad. If they play Khalid Latif or Khurram Manzoor, then i'm fine with Nazir being dropped, but I don't want these tried and tested failures to be given more chances, like Hameed, Butt, Taufeeq, etc. Instead of all these, I'd rather have Nazir...cuz he is as incosistant as the rest, yet when he fires, it pretty much assures a win for Pakistan. Plus he's a brilliant fielder, by far the best fielder in all of Pakistan, and with Pakistan's recent fielding display, he could probably make it to the team just on his fielding skills.

Hameed is a very selfish player...whether Pakistan will be chasing 400 or 100, he'll play his own way. Plus, like all other openers, he has a big problem fishing outside his offstump and his weaknesses were clearly proven by SA bowlers on the SA tour before WC 2007. He failed miserbly there, and I watched all those matches and his technique is horrible to say the least. Yea he looks pretty when he drives through the covers, but not so pretty when he edges it to the keeper or to the slips. He also is very prone to being LBW cuz of his technique.

Khalid Latif replaces Hafeez in ODI squad

Osman Samiuddin

October 21, 2007

Pakistan’s continuing troubles with their opening combination have forced the selectors to call up Khalid Latif and release Mohammad Hafeez from the 15-man squad to face South Africa in the third ODI in Faisalabad on Tuesday.

Pakistan have tried two opening combinations in two games so far and Imran Nazir, Mohammad Hafeez and Kamran Akmal have provided starts of 18 and 1. Hafeez was dropped for the second ODI and the highest score by an opener remains Nazir’s 16 in the first ODI.

The 21-year old Latif has been on the fringes of selection to the senior squad for some time now. He first came to national attention when he led the Pakistan U-19 team to victory in the 2004 World Cup in Bangladesh.

He was unlucky to miss out on selection for the ICC World Twenty20 despite impressing during the various training camps held before the tournament. But solid performances in the recent home series against Australia A have finally paid off.

Latif ended the three-match ODI series in September as the leading scorer on either side. His tally of 228 runs included one fifty and a spectacular unbeaten 142 in Lahore as Pakistan successfully chased 332 against an attack that included Jason Gillespie, James Hopes and Dan Cullen.

“We are struggling with an opening pair at the moment,” Salahuddin Ahmed, the chief selector, told Cricinfo. "We are already playing Kamran as an opener to make place for an extra bowler.

“Latif is a very good, upcoming youngster and was in brilliant form against Australia A recently. He fully deserves his place in the squad. Hafeez has been released and he will go back to regain his form in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.”

It is understood that Latif will not play in Faisalabad but may get an opportunity later in the series. Still, Pakistan are likely to go in with their third different opening pair in as many matches; Nazir’s continuing run of poor scores means Yasir Hameed will most likely open the innings with Akmal.

And in light of an impressive bowling performance in the second ODI, Pakistan will not risk Mohammad Asif for the third game. Asif sat out the first two matches with an elbow injury that flared up during the second Test in Lahore.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Agree on Nazir, unless we find some good opener.

Plus he can play the short balls better than some of the others and with proteas having lot of seamers he is a better bet than Hameed.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Yaar tum log kis tarha kishi ko selfish bol sakty ho......is tarha tu Yousuf bhi apni century k liya slow ho jata hai....example last match ki lay lo.....Run out wo bhi karwata hai sab ko..........ek hazar misaalain hain..........pehlay background pata karo us player ka phir koi LAQAAB do us ko.......Aur uper bhaisahab bol rahy hain Khurram ko chance do...yaar phir say wohi galti 19 20 saal k larkay ko foran ek do series acha khelney per Pakistan kheela do aur career tabah kar do...........bhai 3 saal atleast chooro us ko.....

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Don't you have to bat for at least first 10 overs to take advantage of power play?? Nazir hardly ever lasts 5 overs so what's the point??

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

I think Zim series should be utilized to try new openers as well as bowlers. It will be a good exposure to them vs an "international" team.aab yeah naa hoo kay aadhee team retire hoo jaey kay , humein zim kaa tour nhei khilaya!

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Imran nazir has been a big disappointment and it is only right that he should be dropped. he hardly ever lasts 10 overs and if he does that is because the opposition has dropped his catches.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

The time is right for a change. Imran Nazir has really been lacking in being able to give us a good start. He is the specialized opener, not Kamran Akmal and should have delivered. Anyways, its good to try Yasir Hameed. At least he is consistent in his performance and holds a good ODI average. He also made 2 ODI centuries playing for Pakistan A vs Australia A recently. That Aussie A lineup had Gillespie & Hopes in their attack. He deserves a good 2-3 start as opener.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Oh no!! Butt is back!

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

The question is who lasts 10 overs??? Butt? Hafeez? Akmal? Taufeeq? Afridi? All have been tried and tested failures. The way I look at it, is that all these openers I listed are just as incosistant as Nazir..but when Nazir gets going he takes the game away from the oppostion, where as when Butt gets going, he hardly ever stamps his authority on the oppostion.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

How does the weather look. Is it raining already?

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Misbah should bat even before Malik. He is a regular batsman and needs more overs to play. He should bat after Yousaf. He can hit the ball and he can stay at the crease. If they send him early enough and if he could score 50 by 40th overs, I think he could prove a better hitter of the ball than even the like of Afridi in last 10 overs.

Re: 3rd ODI, Pakistan vs South Africa at Faislabad, Oct 23

Probably its snowing in Faisalabad. It is that time of the year when Punjab get extreme cold and a lot of snow.
