LAHORE: The National Logistics Corporation (NLC) has undertaken construction, renovation and extension work of 36,000 schools in Punjab under the Education Sector Reform Programme (ESRP).
Punjab NLC Project Director Brigadier (r) Muhammad Ali Saeed told journalists that the provincial government had provided Rs 6.974 billion initially for this purpose.
“Of the total 36,000, work on 4,348 schools will be completed by November this year and developmental work on 2,000 schools is under way at a fast pace, while 600 schools have already been handed over to the Punjab Government after completion,” he said. Under the Health Sector Reform Programme (HSRP), he said, the provincial government provided Rs 2.855 billion in funds to the Corporation for renovation projects of Basic Health Units (BHUs) and Rural Health Centres (RHCs). The NLC project director further said that out of the total 2,456 units, 1,305 would be completed by November this year.
He said that a grant of Rs 2.85 billion would be spent on the construction and extension of 139 colleges in the first phase and work on 56 colleges had already been started, while 216 colleges would be renovated in the second phase of the project.
Brigadier (r) Saeed said the corporation would also construct 176 new patrolling posts and undertake extension work of existing 347 posts that would cost a total of Rs 2.52 billion. The corporation was also awarded a Rs 1.3 billion project for construction and renovation of 30 urban and 26 rural police stations, he said, adding that the NLC would complete both the projects within 18 months after receiving funds from the provincial government. Brigadier (r) Saeed said the NLC, from its profits, would construct 35 new schools- six elementary and 29 primary schools- throughout Punjab at a cost of Rs 140 million. Under this project, construction of four schools has already been underway, he said, similarly the corporation would recycle profits from the ESRP.
In addition to district offices, the NLC established regional offices in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan and Bahawalpur, where 1,800 employees including retired army men are performing their duties. app

Re: 36,000 schools built, renovated in Punjab

excellent news. i'm just very sad that the same kind of developement is not happening in NWFP and Balochistan, although Sindh was going along the same agenda of opening schools (I haven't kept up with whether they actually opened all the schools they had planned to open).

Re: 36,000 schools built, renovated in Punjab

I agree with you Ali, all these positive news always come from daily times.

It might be true for afterall the budget has to be spent and kickbacks have to be taken on tenders.

As for what really Pak cares about education is evident from the fact that a teacher is being paid a fix Rs5000 salary per month. Now you can imagine what he can do with Rs 5000/-

Re: 36,000 schools built, renovated in Punjab

Alhamdulilallah. Pakistan has never before seen such growth. God Bless President Musharaf for his great leadership and vision. Long may he continue to save Pakistan from people that had previously ruined Pakistani economy and taken it to bankruptcy. Ameen.

Re: 36,000 schools built, renovated in Punjab

What school teachers are you talking about? I have loads of school teachers in my family working in Pakistan, in private AND in public/government schools, and 5000 is far from accurate. Are you talking about village salaries? It follows that the cost of living is much lower in a village, thence the lower salary. But 5000 is not the standard in Karachi, I can tell you. I'd say, it borders on 7000 per month in government schools and higher; and then in private schools its much more than that.

I do agree they should be paid more, but most of your school teachers are women who are living in households where their income is not the only income.

I think first and foremost, more needs to be budgeted towards education in the national budget, but I'd rather see most kids in pakistan get an education up to matric level throughout the country, including villages, and see teachers have modest increases in salary, than see teachers get pay increases at the expense of building new schools. You have to remember that with the total budget of Pakistan, they can only do so much. There is no way, they can have a full public school system with beautiful buildings and decent salaries like they do in the States and in European countries.

Re: 36,000 schools built, renovated in Punjab

Do you have any survey/source to back the claim?

Re: 36,000 schools built, renovated in Punjab

The schools I've visited in Karachi - the coed ones - mostly female teachers. The girls schools - of course mostly female teachers.

The boys schools - I am guessing both, but my male cousins usually mention male professors.

I'm talking about school, not universities.

Granted, its Karachi. Do you feel the demographics are much different in the north? The villages, I imagine, it would be mostly men.

Re: 36,000 schools built, renovated in Punjab

I bet that the man who polishes Mush's boot gets lot more than school teacher. And for your info, in villages its mostly male teachers and most of them do not live in the village they are posted in but have to travel 2-3 hours to reach their.

Currently the government hires all teachers and lecturers on contrat basis with no benefits at all. A lecturer gets 10000Rs and teacher 5000/-

Pakistan remains one of the countries that spend the least GDP on education compared to its neighbours.

Re: 36,000 schools built, renovated in Punjab

Absolutely true. I can only second that. Since I also have teachers here and there in family and friends circle and they do not get more than 10.000. Ya phir he is teaching at Aitchison and Co. There you have other heights to reach. And yes boot polishers get double the actual amount.
