30-day coutdown to "restoration of judges" has not begun/coalition leaders reaffirm..

More backsliding on the judges restoration issue by the PPP.

According the PML Nawaz the 30-day coutdown began on 31st March when President Musharraf administered the oath to the Federal cabinet. So 30 days would be up by 30th April. Now Sherry Rehman states the countdown will begin only after all the provincial govts are formed, which won’t be another week or more yet. That would mean the 30 days expiration would go into late May.

I wonder what Nawaz Sharif’s lot will say to this?

Re: 30-day coutdown to "restoration of judges" has not begun - Sherry Rehman

Sherry Rehman is supposed to give the Official govt position, and she has said 30 days has not begun yet, and will not begin until all 4 provincial govts have been sworn in. Will the PML Nawaz agree with this position?, especially as their stance is that it began in March.

Pakistan’s unruly lawyers

Establishing real rule of law for the country will require more than reinstating ousted judges.
April 10, 2008

It’s no surprise to see black-suited men in the streets of Karachi pelting a member of President Pervez Musharraf’s Cabinet with tomatoes, eggs and even a shoe. But it is disheartening when the men in black suits turn out to be lawyers who have spent the last year protesting the lack of rule of law in Pakistan, and when seven people are left dead.

By voting out Musharraf’s party in February, Pakistanis have set off a slow-moving political earthquake. Musharraf clings to the presidency but is in danger of impeachment. Parliament is stalemated by rival parties. And the judiciary has become the prize in a fierce power struggle between president and parliament.

The battle over control of the courts has been underway since Musharraf ousted the chief justice of the Supreme Court more than a year ago. Young lawyers have led a movement to reinstate Iftikhar Chaudhry and dozens of other justices dismissed by Musharraf – and to build a judicial system that at last can claim independence and integrity. Musharraf retaliated with an edict that allowed police to arrest demonstrating lawyers on terrorism charges – and placed the chief justice under house arrest.

For most of Pakistani history, the courts have been firmly under the thumb of the authoritarian executive. Then Chaudhry and some of his fellow judges began growing spines. They began convicting presidential cronies of corruption, asking after some of the estimated 4,000 Pakistanis who have disappeared in police custody, and finally appeared poised to nix Musharraf’s unconstitutional reelection scheme.

Now the democratically elected government has a plan to reinstate Chaudhry and the other judges. This will take time and require delicacy. As lawmakers are well aware, they must not only deal with the fired judges and those who have been hired to replace them, they must also deal with more fundamental questions about how a truly independent judiciary can be built amid the country’s political turmoil.

Will parliament demand confirmation hearings for judges, or will it attempt to control them by appointing them only for brief terms? Will it try to pack the Supreme Court with justices who will vote to impeach Musharraf? Or will it instead embark on the structural reforms needed to end the culture of impunity for the powerful? At stake is whether Pakistan can evolve at last into a nation where the rule of law applies to presidents, judges, police officers – and even lawyers.

She is an oportunist, she is the reason why i hate reserved seat for women, women should def have proper and equal representation in the assembly, its amust for our society, she could have never won a seat in the parliament had it not been for the reserved seat rule.

Re: 30-day coutdown to “restoration of judges” has not begun - Sherry Rehman

:hehe:

Well now even more backsliding by the PPP on when the 30-day deadline will begin. Originally, Sherry Rehman said it would begin only after all 4 provincial govts had been sworn in. But now the Law Minister Farooq Naik has pushed it back further by stating it will not begin until all the rest of the ministers are appointed to the federal govt as well. The rest of the federal ministers are not likely to be appointed for some weeks yet, which means the 30-day coutdown would begin sometime in May, and complete in June!

Pakistan Minister for Law and Justice Farooq H Naik Friday said that the issue of deposed judges would be resolved amicably in accordance with the wishes of the people and in the light of the Murree Declaration. Talking to Dawn News TV channel he said the parliament would decide whether the judges should be reinstated through resolution or a constitutional package. He said 30-day countdown for the restoration of the judges should begin after completion of the process of government formation which is still not completed as only 23 ministers are working where there are 40 ministries in the federal government. Responding to a question, he said the Attorney General of Pakistan was not assisting him in finalizing a constitutional package. He pointed out that Attorney General is appointed by the president on the advice of the prime minister.

coalition leaders reaffirm the restoration of deposed judges within agreed time frame

The days of illegal President are numbered…as the coalition leaders have reaffirmed their position to restore deposed judges within agreed time frame…

I was just wondering if the illegal President will come back top Pakistan or move to some other destination from China as he faces great risk of facing trial for treason and acting against the constitution of Pakistan…according to article 6 of the constitution…

Judges being restored in 30 days
Updated at: 1530 PST, Tuesday, April 15, 2008
ISLAMABAD: An important meeting of the leaders of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) Tuesday decided to act upon the 30-day deadline for the restoration of deposed judiciary.

According to the reports, the meeting decided that the resolution regarding the restoration of the deposed judges would not be included in the constitutional package.

It was also agreed upon that the Murree Declaration would be fully implemented.

The meeting that occurred at Zardari House here, was attended by PPP leaders Raja Pervez Ashraf, Raza Rabbani, Khurshid Shah, Farooque Naik, Sherry Rehman and Naveed Qamar and PML (N)’s Raja Zafar-ul-Haq, Khawaja Asif, Chaudhry Nisar Ali and Ahsan Iqbal.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman could not attend the meeting, as he is ailing

Re: 30-day coutdown to “restoration of judges” has not begun - Sherry Rehman

Even today when Zardari, Nawaz and the ANP leader met today (the MMA leader Fazlur Rehman was missing), there was no agreement on when the 30 days period had begun or begins? Only a vague declaration that judges will be restored “within 30 days”.

It’s been 38 days since the Murree Declaration was signed, and PPP ministers like Sherry Rehman and Farook Naik have said the “30 day deadline” has not even begun yet. :hehe:

Re: coalition leaders reaffirm the restoration of deposed judges within agreed time f

Civil society has spoken, and the heroic judges who bravely resisted the dictator are being returned. :biggthumb

After 9 long years, Pakistan has hope again :jhanda:

Go through the other thread by Yazdi, things are no longer promising for Musharraf now. He better commit suicide.
