Shershah Syed in his recent long Sunday Magazine article talks about how 30,000 young women die in Pakistan during pregnancy. He cites how when Queen Mumtaz died giving her 14th children birth, king Shahjahan in her memory built the Taj Mahal. He cites how Mahathir Mohamad started providing healthcare at village level. He order keeping a red book in every health centre to record death of a women during pregnancy or delivering a baby. Whenever he visited any health centre he demanded this book and every health centre Incharge paid utmost attention that there should not be any entry in this red book. The writer wishes the same health care from Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz based on his address to the nation. The writer should know Mohathir Mohamad could only do this because as a prime minister he never felt any need of importing bullet proof cars for his cabinet minister. A country can either afford bullet proof cars or education or health care.
but there were not a bunch of foriegn and domestic self declatred holy warriors i.e. psycho thugs hell bent on blowing up mahathir back then.
Pakistan needs people like shaukat aziz with a brain, with good leadership up top good things will happen in the country. While i dont support wasteful expenditure, safety of our leaders is important..good ones that is, those who are pals of the psycho types dont need bullet proof cars.
