Ok that actually reminds me a story and keeping that in mind, the budha did the right thing by not asking for their permission.
The store goes like this:
In 2005 I was visiting Pakistan. My mamoo had to go into some shop while I waited for him outside the shop on our bike. In Pakistan I always had my camera with me, just in case I have to take a picture of something weird. Anyway, there was this mochi (shoemaker) who was sitting on a mat (on the ground) big enough just for himself. I thought to myself you don’t get to see this kind of stuff everyday, so let me take picture. I also thought it would be polite and probably make him happy if I go introduce myself before taking the picture (remember, I was standing across the road on the other side and he was busy in his work).
So I went to him, told him I am from the US and wanted to take his picture. You know what he said?
I was telling my mamoo and we laughed
ghalti aap ki thi… bataney ki kya zaroorat thi ke aap bahar ke haiN, and that too from the US
… u shudv’e just told him that he looked interesting and that you’d like to take a pic
