LUCKNOW: Three people were killed and several injured on Friday when protests in northern India against US President George W Bush’s visit turned into street riots between Hindus and Muslims, officials said.
Police in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh state, used teargas and truncheons to break up clashes between Muslims and Hindus when the protests degenerated into fierce street riots, said city police chief Ashutoch Pandey.
“Muslims after offering prayers went around ordering shops to down their shutters to protest President Bush’s visit to India which sparked off the clashes because the Hindus objected,” Pandey said. “One person was killed in the exchange of fire between the two communities,” he said. “Dozens of people were injured in the clashes.”

Take the religion out of the situation. What do you feel about one group which is protesting forcing another group which is not protesting to paricipate in their protest by closing their means to earn money for the day. Does that seem right or wrong? Dont think its about "secular" etc etc.... Of course you would like to put it that way coz it makes you feel good... (actually do you think situation would have been different if you were to replace it with Shia and Sunni in Pakistan for some cause that one of them protests and the other group doesnt necesarily support or oppose??)

Muslims better learn to live in Indoostan, ahem, the world's "biggest democracy". That message really needs to be pushed down their throats. And no one can do it better than a bunch of peaceful, democracy loving Shiv Sainaks :)

Am sure there are other instances which support the point you made and its probably true that a minority in any nation will have to adjust a bit (you would say a hell of a lot...) but am still not able to understand how this incident leads to this conclusion (pl read my post above...)

If a group of people force others to close the shops they should be ready to face the consequences. The very fact that these maniacs felt that they could get away with forcing people to close shops show what kind of mentality these people have ...

Munnay, don't preach me. Preach the Bharati Muslims. It is THEY who were demanding Hindus to close their shops. Looks like the veggie-eaters need to teach them some more lessons in secularim, just like they did in Gujrat. ;)

It was HINDU-MUSLIM riot in so-called SECULAR Bharat. Why were people thinking in terms of religion if they really were secular? In order to stay secular, either Bharati Muslims should not have asked Hindus to close their shops, or Hindus should have closed their shops.
Of course, you being a “secular” Hindu will believe that it was “fundamentalist” Muslims who were at fault. But irrespective of that, One of you behaved based on religion instead of behaving in a true secular way.

No I dont think so...most Indians would know for sure that that is not true though quite a few wish it was the case and quite a few know it will never be the case.
