I claimed that their figures are comparable … None of them is my relative neither I would like to be partial … so, I am putting down statistics of both and you can decide yourself.

^ That is subjective really. You left out the part where there is no competition between these two; Misbah has 5 hundreds, his highest score 161. Younis highest scores in 313 with 24 hundreds. Same thing in ODI...

Re: 2nd Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Colombo (SSC), 14 August 2014

What a loser of a team......how r they still holding test status with performances like this ?

This team will crash out of the upcoming world cup in the first round.

Re: 2nd Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Colombo (SSC), 14 August 2014

our batting is simply a joke…i dont even know what will happen after younis khan and misbahh retire…there is nothing on bench.

speaking of youins, i have been saying this for a while that he either scors big or nothing…let me back up my claim with numbers…here is his last 34 test innings…in 25 innings, he has scored less than 35…

you will be shocked to know that he only scored 2 fifties in these 34 innings. Not to mention that all these innings were played batting friendly conditions except one series in south africa.

that is pathetic and simply not good enough for some one who claims to be backbone of our team. 70% of the time he fails to score above 35.

He needs to be more consistent. He will score one century in every test series but then nothing else from him in that series…

Re: 2nd Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Colombo (SSC), 14 August 2014

That is boom boom type of figures … per gayee tou chakka aur nahi tou gulli … or Boom in some innings and bust in most others. right?

Suppose two players have same average (50 runs per inning), but most of the time one player fails to make even 50 and in few matches that player makes 100 (hence his average is 50). Other player makes at least 50 in most innings and few hundreds. Who is better player … the one who is consistent or the one who is not?

[Tandulkar has no triple century but Shewag has ... that does not mean Shewag is better player than Tandulker ... and reason is obvious. Tandulker average is better than Shewaq plus Tandulker is consistent player. That means, team can rely on runs from Tandulker more than Shewaq]

Cricket is game of numbers. It does not make any difference if you make 40 runs with 10 fours and 30 dots balls … or 40 runs with 40 singles without any dot balls. One sees how many balls it took you to get that 40 and what is the average runs you make per inning, plus consistency matters. That is all.

A better player is the one who posts runs on average more than other, and also shows consistency so that team can rely on that players.

6 consistent players in team with average 50 would give more 300 runs total score than 6 non-consistent players with average 50 … that is different matter than 6 consistent players may not post 600 total score as many times as 6 non-consistent players … but 6 consistent players in team would always post reasonable score of around 300 while 6 non-consistent players would score below 150 most of the times.

That is the reason teams that has consistent players are considered much stronger than team that has non-consistent players, as teams can rely on them.

Re: 2nd Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Colombo (SSC), 14 August 2014

Younis is a very good test batsman (I agree with PD that he either scores big or gets out for low scores) but was never more than an average to decent ODI batsman

Like Misbah he wastes too many balls initially and is not very good at rotating the strike (but this applies to most Pak batsmen), hence is a liability in the limited overs format. Both should not be in the same ODI XI.

Re: 2nd Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Colombo (SSC), 14 August 2014

If we look at Pakistani wicket keepers, the highest score in individual test and also in series was made by Taslim Arif against Australia. His record in that series was:

Taslim Arif joined Pakistan team as Batsman against India. He played 1 match against India, making 136 runs in 2 innings @ average of 68. Anyhow, in his next match he was given gloves as wicket keeper against Australia and scored 307 runs with individual score of 210 NO that stayed highest score by a wicket keeper for long time and now it is second highest score by a wicket keeper. His average against Australia was 102.33.

Then he was given chance to play against WI. He played 2 matches and scored 58 runs at an average of 19.33. He took 2 catches and 1 stumps. After that he was dropped for ever.

Matches: 3
Innings: 4
Not Out: 1

Highest score: 210 not out
Total runs: 307
Average in series: 102.33

100s: 1
50s: 1
Catches: 4
Stumps: 2

So, Taslim Arif made 307 runs in 3 completed innings at an average of 102.33 (1 century and 1 fifty in 4 innings)

After Taslim Arif, the next wicket Keeper that scored highest runs in series is Sarfaraz Ahmed who scored runs in present series ... that he did in 2 series, with 4 fifties ... 50 in all innings. Sarfaraz made 265 runs in 4 innings (1 not out) with an average of 88.33 (one century and 3 fifties in 4 innings).

Actually, both Taslim Arif and Sarfaraz played 4 innings in series, and both got out 3 times (made runs in 9 completed innings).

After above two, the next wicket-keeper was Imtiaz Ahmed. He made 233 runs in 9 completed innings at an average of *25.88 *(3 fifties in 10 innings)

Re: 2nd Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Colombo (SSC), 14 August 2014

What can one say about Pakistani cricket team ... this is Pakistan: Yahan 'andha' batsman ban jata hay, 'langra' fast bowler and 'lula' wicket keeper ... just because 'Andha' was son of the selector, 'langra' was nephew (bhateeja) of the selector and 'lula' was nephew (bhanja) of the selector ... and those who performs, are made to sit behind fence.

Here we see team that is not Pakistani team, but team of Subayeet, Parchi, Rushwat, Pasand aur Na-pasand.

Re: 2nd Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Colombo (SSC), 14 August 2014

SL won by 105 Runs. ODI Series will be another real task for Pakistan as bowlers don’t have nice economy rate. 5,6 & 7 Positions are almost same.

Re: 2nd Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Colombo (SSC), 14 August 2014

Sorry Mr. Saleem but actual figures are

I’ve written on Taslim Arif so no debate on it but Imtiaz Ahmed being an opener in early days of Pakistan Cricket was remarkable, He was the first wicket keeper who scored double century and 2nd was Taslim Arif.
Kamran Akmal has also shown some remarkable performances and was the reason in many memorable victories of Pakistan. Especially in Karachi when Pakistan was 39/6 and he along with took Pakistan to 245. Also his performance in India.

Recent performance of Sarfraz is good and I want him to get a permanent place in Test Squad.

11 The number of instances of Sri Lanka winning both matches of a bilateral two-Test series. The last such instance was five years ago, at home against New Zealand in 2009. Seven of those wins have been against Zimbabwe or Bangladesh; South Africa and West Indies are the other teams to have suffered such defeats. For Pakistan, it was only the second such defeat: they’d lost a two-Test series 2-0 in South Africa in 2002-03.

14 Rangana Herath’s match haul in the Test. His figures of 14 for 184 are the second-best in Tests for Sri Lanka, next only to Muttiah Muralitharan’s 16 for 220 against England at The Oval in 1998. These are also the second-best match figures for any bowler against Pakistan, after Anil Kumble’s 14 for 149 in Delhi in 1999.

4 The number of instances of left-arm bowlers taking more than 14 wickets in a Test - the last such instance was by Hedley Verity against Australia at Lord’s in 1934, when he took 15 for 104. Chaminda Vaas is the only other left-arm bowler to take 14 in a match - he took 14 for 191 against West Indies at the SSC in 2001.

23 Herath’s series haul, which is the highest by any bowler in a two-Test series (or in a series when a bowler played only two Tests). The previous-highest was 22, by Muralitharan against South Africa in 2006; Murali took 22 at an average of 18.04 in that series, while Herath’s 23 in this series came at an average of 15.13.

17 The number of five-fors for Herath in his last 33 Tests, since the beginning of 2011. He has taken 182 wickets during this period, averaging 5.5 wickets per Test, and 26.02 runs per wicket. Before 2011, Herath had taken four five-fors, and 78 wickets, in 24 Tests, averaging 3.25 wickets per Test, and 36.15 runs per wicket.

265 The series aggregate for Sarfraz Ahmed, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper. In four innings he made one century and three fifties, with scores of 55, 52*, 103 and 55, and was the top run-getter for Pakistan. His aggregate is thehighest by a Pakistan wicketkeeper in a series since India’s tour there in 2006, when Kamran Akmal scored 293 runs in five innings.

4 The number of fifty-plus scores for Sarfraz in the series, which is a record for a Pakistan wicketkeeper. There have been five instances of Pakistan wicketkeepers making three fifty-plus scores in a series. The only previous instance of any wicketkeeper touching 50 in every innings he batted in a series (with a minimum of four innings batted) was Andy Flower against India in 2000-01, when he made scores of 183*, 70, 55, 232*.**

Re: 2nd Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Colombo (SSC), 14 August 2014

You are right. It was my mistake. I took the figures that PTV stream was giving about Imtiaz Ahmed during test. But now I feel they were wrong about Imtiaz Ahmed figures. Imtiaz Ahmed did made 209 against NZ in 1955 as wicket keeper and that was first double century by a Pakistani and possibly any wicket keeper.

It did not come to my mind, because Imtiaz not always played as wicket keeper (just like Sangakara and first test of Tasleem Arif … that I mentioned above), so seeing the figure on TV, I thought Imtiaz double century was probably as opener and not wicket keeper … but even now, if TV figure was right than it is possible that Imtiaz Ahmed did not played whole series as wicket keeper.

I did not checked the records but accepted what was on TV, and that was my fault (I am still not checking the records to confirm that Imtiaz Ahmed in 1955 series played whose series as wicket keeper or not … as in those days, Hanif Mohammed also used to play as Wicket keeper).

Regardless, the point I was trying to make from my post was that in Pakistan merits and performance make no difference. Imtiaz Ahmed did play long cricket, but what was the fault of Taslim Arif that he only got 6 matches.

In my opinion (and first class figures also shows that), Sarfaraz is better batsman than any other batsman wicket keeper Pakistan has (that include all Akmals except Umar Akmal) and is also as good as any wicket Keeper that Pakistan has (including all Akmals), still, he was deprived test place (and ODI place that he deserve as he makes runs fast). Actually, Sarfaraz on his batting performance alone (first class averages of over 40) deserve to be part of test and ODI team. But then, we are talking about Pakistan.

Anyhow, after seeing your posts, I searched and found that you are right in saying that his double century was as wicket keeper and it was first double century by any wicket keeper.

Here are list of players with highest innings as wicket keeper.

Note: Sangakara made triple century and several score above 250. But I believe they were all scored when he was not playing as wicket keeper. That is what I can say with mentioned statistic figures in front of me.
