Woolmer warns against complacency

Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan coach, has cautioned his players against complacency after they saved the first Test at Mohali against all expectations. Talking to AFP, he put the game in perspective: “After all it was a draw and we are here to win the series. It’s the first step in the right direction and to grow as a team we need to take such steps on a regular basis.”

Speaking about the efforts of Akmal and Razzaq, he said: “When we reached the ground there was a mood of determination to save the Test and the way Akmal and Razzaq played was tremendous. I am on record saying that Akmal can bat and he got an opportunity and made the most of it. The state of the pitch also helped them bat with ease but their efforts should not be undermined by that.” Akmal made 109, becoming only the fifth Pakistani wicketkeeper to score a Test hundred, while Razzaq made a patient and uncharacteristically restrained 71.

Woolmer also complained that the Pakistan bowlers hadn’t come to grips with the SG balls being used for in India. “I am not making any excuses but the ball used in India doesn’t seem to swing and the advantage of a new ball was not there.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s amazing fightback in the Mohali Test has come in for fulsome praise from Hanif Mohammad, the former captain and legendary opening batsman. “This is simply one of the finest fightbacks,” Hanif told Press Trust of India. “Playing in such tremendous pressure was no joke and Kamran [Akmal] and [Abdul] Razzaq achieved accomplished the task in style with cool heads.”

Akmal’s innings even moved Dinesh Karthik, the Indian wicketkeeper, to say that he had been inspired: “It was good to see a wicketkeeper score runs, Karthik told The Indian Express. If there was one thing I want to pick from his showing, it would be the relaxed manner in which he batted. I have certainly been inspired by what he did.” Karthik himself has had a poor trot with the bat in Test cricket – seven innings have fetched him just 103 runs at 14.71, and at Mohali he had another failure, scoring just 6.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

Salman will be rested in the second test. Confirmed by Inzimam as per Jang newspaper.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

Hmm only if the team selectors frequented Khl 1 more often. :D

Anyway heres my 2 cents on the team:

  1. Hameed - Butt-erfingers has been upimpressive with the bat and his fingers.
  2. Shoaib Malik - Taufeeq needs some rest too.
  3. Inzi
  4. Youhana
  5. Asim Kamal
  6. Razzler
  7. Afridi - He adds firepower to the batting, compliments Kaneria's spin and adds the equivalent of 5 people in fielding.
  8. Akmal
  9. Naveed
  10. Sami
  11. Danish

There you have it. Batting lineup till number 9 as we know Rana Naveed doesnt screw around with the willow in his hands. Three seamers (sami, rana, razzler) and two spinners (afridi and danish).

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

Rumour has it that Ganguly and Write asked Kolkata ground management to not to touch pitch till Test morning. Chances are that they are planing to go all out with Balaji and Co once again. Kumble and Harbi might have been read by Pakistan already. Woolie asking Danesh, Afridi, Arshad Khan and Youins to bowl for the batsmen in nets didn't get unoticed. Kumble's phainti in the second innings in Mohali also left some scars on Indian spin. Even the worst spin player, Razzaq managed to read all of his tricks and was quiet comfortable after the first session. This is ofcourse not looking good for India. Now India wants to be Pakistan of 80s and 90s: using its pace attack as the primary weapon. Sadly enough, Pakistan has also become India of that era, atleast without Akhtar and Shabbir, our bowling is comparable to that or current SL team. Pakistan is without its trademark. Tear-away pace attack that is.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

For this match...Pakistan must play with 2 spinners...I think going in to this match with just one spinner will be a big mistake. Danish needs another spinner to support him...now if it is Afridi or Arshad...that is up to the captain and the coach...but I would prefer Afridi cuz he can bat a bit too...he'll probably score more runs than how many our top 3 batmen combined scored in the first test match.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

^ Agree we need two spinners and therfore we should go in with both Kaneria and Arshad.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

i agree with your analysis …

  1. shahid afridi
  2. yasir hameed
  3. shoaib malik
  4. inzamam ul haq *
  5. yousuf youhana
  6. asim kamal
  7. abdul razzak
  8. kamran akmal +
  9. mohammad sami
  10. naved ul hassan
  11. danish kaneria

since it is expected to be a green top … naveed is definitly a betta choice over arshad … there is an extra spinner in afridi …

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

It is pity that all the probable 11's have Sami in it while all/most agree that he has been consistently horrible.

Also, most of us have a soft corner for Razzaq because of his second innings performance. Though I still believe that he is not of much use at test level, maybe Sami can make way for Razzaq. We can have Naveed and Razzaq to open to bowling and then Kaneria, Arshad and Afridi to follow (and even Shoaib if he gets picked ahead of Younis).

Of course this looks like a weak (fast) bowling attack but Sami's inclusion does not add any strength to it either. Some would argue that Kolkata is top green but the problem is that if we don't have any quality fast bowler, we should not deny a good spinner because we must include somebody who can run 30 yards and bowls erratic length.

Though this is not going to happen by my 11 would be:
(1) Taufeeq or Salman (both equally bad, so chose whosoever you want)
(2) Yasir
(3) Younis or Shoaib Malik
(4) Inzi
(5) Youhana
(6) Asim Kamal
(7) Afridi
(8) Akmal
(9) Razzaq
(10) Arshad Khan
(11) Kaneria

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

Salman Butt
Yasser Hameed
Inzimam
Y. Youhana
Asim Kamal
Razzaq
Shahid Afridi - Don’t even think about leaving him out of this Test
Kamran Akmal - Best New talant for Pakistan since aussie tour.
Danish Kaneria - Arshad Khan has to wait,
Rana Naveed
Sami - If Shoaib Akhter still nursing his hamstring

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

Talks of Green Top are around and it means that Afridi might not play after all and a better equipped batsman(on paper) such as Yasir will make to the team. I am not sure what to make of the final composition. Our bowling attack definately needs some support, either in form of Afridi or Arshad but how do they plan to fit that in is getting more and more confusing.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

Afridi ko kiya ‘ghanse’ kaat’ti hai Saby,? :konfused:

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

What is he on? Was he playing solitaire on his laptop when Balaji and Irfan/Zaheer were bowling? Balaji was moving ball by feet if not yards using seam/pitch and it was swinging a lot between wicket and keeper (if anyone noticed). Had Balaji been able to bring that late swing to occur before wicket we could’ve been all out for 52 again, but I’m glad that didn’t happen.

If rumours are true Balaji might take 10 wickets in coming match if our batsmen of “Younis” calibre cannot read the swing of the ball.

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

^^ Yarroo Younis Khan is a better batsman not to worry, he will come good there are two more test matches, plus look at the positives he can bowl and take wickets

wel he should be given this chance and see what he does in the rest of two test matches. He is not bad than those who played plus not worst those sitting on the bench so nothing to loose!

this is the test match Pakistan has to take.....

Re: 2nd Test - Pakistan vs India - Kolkata

Captain1 jee, Babloo ko chore doo app, meri sunnooo,

SG ball sucks! Indian use it cause they’r use to them. 2ndly they soak-in too much moisture from the ground + and that too from the rough side as the varnish wears out.

So it depends on the condition and bowler’s effort.

The Pathan and Balaji swing occurred with overcast skies and moister laden outfield from earlier rains. So go figuer
