A-Hole Umpire gave Dravid wrongly OUT. May cost India the match.
You work so hard for so long and then you get done in because of the Umpire's incompetence.
That is why I am all for the referral system.
^ I am also in favour (it should atleast in theory reduce controversy/the no. of bad decisions) of the referral system but unfortunately it is not fool proof either
case in point: 4th WI v England Test in Barbados in which third umpire Daryl Harper got atleast 4 decisions wrong, Windies being the victim on each occasion.
India I believe can still draw this game. They need to bat till tea tomorrow (or another 3 sessions) and the game will be saved.
Re: 2nd Test NZ v India in Napier: India follow on trailing by 314 runs
^Unfortunately India's tail (in Test Matches) starts with Yuvraj. So, after Laxman not much batting to come.
Karthik is a political selection to the team (courtesy fellow Tamil & chairman of the Selection committee - Kris Srikkanth) and is making India pay. His wicketkeeping sucks and so does his batting.
Re: 2nd Test NZ v India in Napier: India follow on trailing by 314 runs
**Ghambir n Dravid saved the day for India ..
An inning defeat is certainly out of question .... as india is only trailing by 62 runs wid 8 wickets in hand ....
It will b an interesting day 2morrow

Re: 2nd Test NZ v India in Napier: India follow on trailing by 314 runs
NZ have more often than not failed to drive home the advantage they got in the 1st innings ...... They had Aussies reeling but couldn't finish it off
Unless the pitch gets severely worse i guess it'll be rather a Tame draw in the end like INDIA vs. PAKISTAN at Mohali in 2005
coming back to the referral process I think it is only worth it if the third umpire has access to hawkeye and other latest technology plus there should be a max. time limit of 2 min per referral. Harper took a ridiculous amount of time (4 or 5 min.) in some cases and soney pe suhaga still got it wrong adding to controversy rather than reducing it.
4-5 referrals per innings (or 20 in a completed Test Match or 40min over 5 days) should atleast in theory help reduce the no. of bad decisions because of the umpire's incompetence or bias
Re: 2nd Test NZ v India in Napier: India follow on trailing by 314 runs
^ The referral system needs to be fine tuned. But I don't agree with people (including some current/former players) who say they should get rid of it. Their logic that wrong decisions even out in the end is plain WRONG. A wrong decision against Team A in a crucial situation is not equal to a wrong decision against Team B in a not so crucial situation. Dravid's dismissal yesterday is a case in point. It can still cost India the Test.
To change the subject - Its India's long tail that makes me wonder why Irfan Pathan in not in the team. Ironically, he has become a T20 and ODI player, the formats where his lack of pace means he is often taken apart for SIXES/FOURS.
In Test Matches (esp outside of the subcontinent), his bowling can still be very useful plus he lenghtens the batting line up. He won us the Perth Test not very long ago with his bowling as well as batting.
In the current team, none of the players after Number 5 have been known to occupy the crease for a long time.
Although crease occupation is the need of the hour runs are important too. India need to bat till tea or add another 200 runs on the final day.
Yuvraj can bat a bit but in the absence of Dhoni, it is essentially down to three players - Tendulkar, Gambhir and Laxman - to see India thru to safety.
We have all seen final day jitters before but the fact that the only wicket to fall yesterday was because of an umpiring error should give India hope.
Re: 2nd Test NZ v India in Napier: India follow on trailing by 314 runs
Wow, India is probably going to save the match (draw) from a possible innings defeat.
Losing Tendu early today was a big blow to India's hopes of survival but both Gambhir and Laxman have batted with great commonsense and patience
So far so good for India........with 60 overs remaining in the day there is still some work to be done
(cricinfo)
Gambhir has stayed out there for 557 minutes in this marathon effort. Laxman is on 30 and India trail by 8 runs.
(cricinfo)
The longest innings played in New Zealand is by Shoaib Mohammad: 720 mins. Gibbs is second with 659 mins and Daryl Cullinan is third (658 mins)
Rahul: " Rahul Dravid’s marathon innings of 270 in the third Test against Pakistan, in Rawalpindi, is the longest innings ever played by an Indian in Test cricket. His 740-minute stay at the crease bettered Sunil Gavaskar’s record of batting for 708 minutes while scoring 172 against England at Bangalore in 1981-82." Click here for the entire list
