PESHAWAR: At least 26 people were killed and 50 others injured when a powerful blast occurred near the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) office on Nisatta Road in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Tuesday.

The attack was claimed by Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) splinter group Jamaatul Ahrar, which was also behind last year’s deadly blast at Wagah Border.
However, TTP central spokesman Mohammad Khorasani in a statement distanced his group from the Mardan attack, saying “we have nothing to do with blasts at public places,” reported BBC Urdu](مردان میں نادرا کے دفتر پر خودکش حملہ، کم سے کم 26 افراد ہلاک - BBC News اردو).
The explosion ripped through the front entrance of a regional branch of Nadra.
“At least 26 people have been killed and more than 50 injured,” said provincial information minister Mushtaq Ghani. “[The] condition of 11 of them is still critical,” Ghani added.
The blast took place at a time when the office was crowded with people lining up to make applications for National Identity Cards (NIC).

‘Suicide attack’

Deputy Inspector General Mardan Division Saeed Wazir told DawnNews the blast was a “suicide attack carried out by a bomber”.
The DIG added that a security guard posted at the office stopped the bomber at the gate, after which he detonated his suicide vest. The suicide attacker was on a motorbike and rammed it into the gate after being denied entry, he said.
Conflicting reports suggest that explosives may have been planted on a motorcycle parked near the Nadra office.
District police chief Faisal Shahzad said the suicide bomber was riding a motorbike. “Apparently the target was the queue as there were around 400 people standing there,” Faisal said.
Some of those critically wounded were taken to the main Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar city.

Powerful explosion

Officials of the Bomb Disposal Unit that reached the scene of the explosion said around 8 to 10 kg of explosive material was used in the attack.
According to initial reports, the powerful blast took place near the gate of the office and damaged doors and windows in the building. At least 40 people are said to be injured, with some in serious condition.
Human body remains were strewn across the blast site.

The area was cordoned off as rescue and security sources rushed to the site. The injured were shifted to Mardan Medical Complex, while an emergency was declared at all medical facilities in the area.
The office is located on the link road that connects Charsadda to Mardan. Mardan is situated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has seen several terrorist attacks over the past several years — many of them targeting security officials.
Search and strike operation

Earlier in December, a search and strike operation was launched in Mardan, resulting in the arrest of about 327 suspected persons, including 16 illegally staying Afghan nationals, and persons involved in various crimes.
Mardan District Police Officer Faisal Shehzad, talking to media persons, had disclosed that the search and strike operation was carried out in Par Hoti, Bashkhali, Gujraat, Iranabad, Chora, Bhaijan, Surakh Dheray, Katakhet, Barikab, Galyara and localities adjoining the city.
He said they had also established checkposts jointly manned by police and army personnel at different points of the district and around 500 vehicles were searched with the purpose to take suspected passengers into custody if there were any inside those vehicles.

Re: 26 killed in suicide attack near Nadra office in Mardan

I am surprised that this wasn't posted as this has become rather rare in Pakistan since the military operation from last year.

To be a devil's advocate, does this mean that KP police reforms aren't enough if not completely failed if this has happened? Suicide blasts aren't happening all over Pakistan as terrorists are on the run.

Perhaps it is time Imran takes a bold step and calls for closure of violent deobandi madarsas which are root cause of this mayhem. Of course, he might loose jamat / right-wing supporters but doesn't he say that he has a mission when it comes to politics? We are leaving these snake factories open while taking care of stray snakes here and there.

I think Imran can gather more support later when terrorism ends and companies do decide to invest in the shuttered industrial units in KP in a safe environment. If only he had the vision and forethought to do it.

Re: 26 killed in suicide attack near Nadra office in Mardan

Very nice. When it doesn't suit your agenda, no no, reduction of terrorism has nothing to do with police reforms, it's all Zarb e Azb. But when it suits your agenda, KPK police has failed to combat terrorism. Last time I checked, the war is still going on. One unfortunate incident of terrorism after a massive space of time cannot discredit zarb e azb or KPK police reforms/performance. Let's not get carried away.

And what do you mean suicide blasts aren't happening anywhere else? Blasts weren't happening in KPK either! But KPK had always been the biggest target of suicide attacks both in peak of terrorism and in downtime. The tragedy of being right next door to FATA.

As with your obsession of IK starting a sectarian war in Pakistan - the day he builds enough schools to accommodate every single madarassah kid in KPK, he can afford to chant slogans against deobandies and asked for complete shut down of maddarrasahs. Until then, for goodness sake Immy, stay the hell away from jumping in any ethnic/sectarian quagmire. Look what it did to Karachi.

KP has been getting blasts back and forth. I didn't post the Parachinar bombing as you can argue that it is part of FATA, not KP.

As far as madarsa issue is concerned, where is the leadership then if he can't criticize it? Every one's maa baap was criticizing drones and US never decided to drone imran over his opposition. This issue does require leadership when PTI can jump on this issue in karachi; charity starts at home so PTI / imran should take a tough stand for this instead of the past ramblings like "can someone please ask why they blew us up?" in balochistan when hazaras were being targeted. He was rightly targeted, but I think that he got away easy as he should have been lambasted for uttering such insensitive and "naive" remarks.

Re: 26 killed in suicide attack near Nadra office in Mardan

Sorry, leadership does not mean stirring ethnic and sectarian sht in an already divided country.

If he wants to eliminate madaraasahs, first build enough schools. Simple as that.

Re: 26 killed in suicide attack near Nadra office in Mardan

That is a nice excuse. He can build schools side by side while closing violent madarsas. In fact, I would have those kids sit at home than go to such ISIS schools.

You say that you aren't a fangirl, but you just proved that you are an AP of PTI.

Re: 26 killed in suicide attack near Nadra office in Mardan

Nope. Imran should still stay away from stirring any sectarian and ethnic rubbish. Let the security agencies and Federal Government come up with policies in regards to madarrassah. I've heard due to civilian incompetence, NACTA might be handed over to ISI. So let's see what they suggest.

Musharraf with all his mullah hating and absolute power couldn't do jack about madrassahs, so Imran should be the last person to jump in this quagmire.

Re: 26 killed in suicide attack near Nadra office in Mardan

Well you know that I'm not some musharraf apologist. I think that his backing down over hudood ordinance was a bad precedent as well.

ISI is an agency and frankly, I don't want them to interfere in domestic pakistani issues as then they don't keep an eye on external issues like India. I don't know if you know this, but the reason that India ended up first in Siachen was because they got spooked by Pakistan who had floated an open tender in London for ski / snow wear in the eighties. There is a reason that it is called inter services intelligence and it was and is to coordinate intelligence better between the armed forces. Even FIA / IB shouldn't be become police here; every agency has to work under their domain if Pakistan has to succeed.

Re: 26 killed in suicide attack near Nadra office in Mardan

seems they need to do this zarb-e-azb in the whole country ? And seal those damned borders and deport all refugees back to wherever they came from

inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon

terrible terrible news.

May Allah Kareem give hidayah to these people who are doing such acts considering they will be in jannah after this...

It is our Ulema mainly responsible for not guiding our young generation properly and rather than looking for commonalities among various groups / sects , each one looking for differences to make their own derh eent ki masjid.

Just see how they fight yesterday in the Nazaryaiti council meeting.
