The Netherlands, with a 3-1 win against a lack lustre Pakistan, took the opportunity of Germany not playing to take over the lead on the third day of the GEW 24th Men’s Champions Trophy in Cologne in a game which was settled in a one minute spell at the end of the second half. After both sides had wasted good goal scoring opportunities the Dutch took the lead with their first and second penalty corners. Taeke Taekema ’s rocket like
drag flick shots left Pakistan goalkeeper Ahmed Alam standing.
With Dutch goalkeeper Guus Vogels making a fine save from Pakistan’s first penalty corner of the game three minutes into the second half, followed almost immediately by Teun de Nooijer latching on to a flat cross from the side line seven minutes into the second half to put his side three goals ahead, any likelihood of a Pakistan comeback was virtually ended. With the Dutch reduced to ten men following the temporary suspension of Piet Hein Geeris in the 63rd minute, Pakistan made one last desperate attempt to salvage the game. Vogels was again equal to the occasion when he saved Muammad Sarwar’s penalty corner strike. The Dutch goalkeeper was finally beaten in the last minute of the game by Muhammad Nadeem from Pakistan’s second penalty corner for the final scoreline.
Frustration was the order of the day for Australia in their game against India. Australia’s penalty corner nightmare continued when they failed to score from 16 attempts. A frustrated coach Barry Dancer said afterwards:
“ We should have beaten India 5-1.” Dancer went on to justify his decision to leave back home two of his most experienced players- high scoring Troy Elder and Brent Livermore - as part of his policy to use this event, as he did the Manchester Commonwealth Games, to give an opportunity to those players high on his list for the 2004 Athens Olympics. It is beginning to look now as though the Australians will be playing for the place in the next Champions event rather than playing for medals in Cologne.
Australia started in their usual high speed, aggressive mode, creating a series of near misses but it was the Indians who opened the scoring in the 13th minute. After Indian goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan had repelled two fierce Australian shots, Jugraj Singh gave the Indians the lead from a penalty stroke.
The Australians swarmed back on the attack but a few minutes later Dhanraj Pillay, the veteran Indian centre forward intercepted a careless Australian midfield pass. Exchanging with Deepak Thakur, they set up Prabhjot Singh for India’s second goal. Within a couple of minutes Scott Webster, with a fine run down the left and from the narrowest of angles, pulled a goal back for a 2-1 interval scoreline.
The second half was one way traffic on the Indian goal although a breakaway won a penalty corner and a third Indian goal for Gagan Ajit Singh. With seven minutes remaining Dean Butler narrowed the margin. The game ended with Australia continuing to squander penalty corner opportunities and India hanging on to a memorial victory.
