Go the Pakistani hockey boys gooooooooooo..........

I love the ref who awarded Pakistan a stroke.

Still got quite a few minutes to go. I pray Pakistan holds on to their lead.

GER 3 v PAK 2

second half in progress

Emmerling and Kunz scored :(:(:(

Sorry guys. Pakistan lost. They did a good job out there but were undone by last minute brilliance from the German #11- Bjorn Emmerling.

Germans completely shut Sohail Abbas like rest of the teams have done regularly. He really is an awesome player but lacks support around him.

Anyhow, Good on Pakistan for a gutsy game and good luck to them for the future games. GooOOOOOoooOOOOO pakiiIIIiiiiIIIiii.

Good performance from Pakistan though.

idher bhi haar gaye lol

Germany Defeat Pakistan 3-2

Germany defeated Pakistan 3-2 in the opening match of the men’s Champions Trophy tournament here today.

“We had a good game and anyone could have won,” said Pakistan’s manager Zafar Ali Khan, “and we are quite satisfied with the performance of the team.”

“We are in a building process which will take some time,” said Pakistan’s coach, Tahir Zaman. “There was a lot of psychological pressure on the boys playing the World Champions in their home country,” he said.

Pakistan lost momentum after the first three minutes as Germany controlled possession and field position in Pakistan’s half, earning Germany the first penalty corner (6th minute).

Florien Kunz threw his drag flick high and to the left of Ahmed Alam in goal. Alam saved with his glove and deflected out.

A minute later Bjorn Michel worked possession into the circle on the right, passed across Alam to the left post where Oliver Domke missed the easy put in, deflecting the ball past the post.

After 10 minutes, Pakistan gained two possessions in Germany’s half but gave up possession too easily when pressured by Kunz and Phillip Crone in Germany’s deep defence

Oliver Domke made amends with a fine individual goal (19th minute) when he controlled loose possession in the circle, turned to his right and slammed the tournaments first goal high into the net past Alam from a metre to the right of the penalty spot.

Pakistan replied on the fast break from a long corner to Germany 2 minutes later. Sarwar carried from quarter line to quarter line with only Kunz and Crone in defence while Pakistan had Jawad and Nadeem forward. Kunz tried to channel Sarwar to the left pocket but Sarwar made his cross to the right pocket for Kunz, Crone and Clemens Arnold in goal to focus to the left.

Nadeem had time and space to pass infield to the front of goal for Jawad to push into the open goal for the equalizer.

Pakistan tried two more fast breaks but Germany’s coach, Bernhard Peters, reorganized his mid-field and had more players in defence to break up the fast break.

Peters had much to say to his team at the break and as the second half commenced, Germany played more deeply in defence but in so doing conceded more space to Pakistan between Germany’s half and defensive quarter line.

With the luxury of more space, Pakistan mounted waves of attack on Germany’s defensive quarter with Germany on the defensive.

Germany conceded a penalty stroke, converted by Sarwar (51st minute) when Kunz blocked a shot on goal by Nadeem to take Pakistan into the lead 2-1.

Sarwar received a yellow card in the 64th minute and Germany capitalized on the imbalance. First, Kunz converted a penalty corner on his 5th attempt (66th minute) to take the score to 2-2 and Bjorn Emmerling scored an opportunists goal (68th minute) as he threw himself at the loose ball in the circle and chip over the line to give Germany the win 3-2.

Germany’s coach, Bernhard Peters said, “We expected the defensive style of the Pakistan team ands they were very dangerous on the counter attack. Our midfield played very well and we had some great chances to score in the second half. I was very happy the team came back from being 1-2 down.”

India 3 Netherlands 3

India were unlucky to draw 3-3 with Netherlands in the second match of the men’s Champions Trophy tournament here today.

India displayed a passion on the pitch which is often admired but not always seen. Though facing a more experienced team from Netherlands, India adopted the tactic of passing rather than beating the opposition with flashy stick-work. The mental attitude of the team was not to be overwhelmed by their opponents.

Netherlands had the measure of India in the first half, but were not able to assert superiority until Taeke Taekema flicked home Netherlands’ first goal (11th minute) from a penalty corner.

Jugraj Singh made the equalizer, converting a penalty stroke awarded by umpire Kim from Korea ( 22nd minute)

Matthijs Brouwer put Netherlands ahead 2-1 at the end of the first half with a deflection goal from a free hit outside the circle.

“I am not happy that we tried to defend the 2-1 lead,” said Dutch coach, Joost Bellaart. “My team did not do itself any favours by having such a bad attitude to winning. It was childish for my team to defend the lead.”

Dhanraj Pillay converted a penalty corner (59th minute) to bring India at 2-2. Pillay’s reflexes created the goal as the ball rebounded from the keeper to Pillay made a chipped cover drive past Guus Vogels in goal.

India took control of the match from Netherlands and took a 3-2 lead. Coach Rajinder Singh applied the tactic of playing the long overhead to the forward pocket or the long pass to the circle from deep in defence.

This resulted in a brilliant goal to Prabhjot Singh. From a long overhead from inside the defensive quarter, Deepak Thakur pounced on the ball in behind Netherlands’ defence and passed into the centre of the circle. Prabhjot dived and deflect the pass from the right into the empty goal (57 minute).

“We keep conceding late goals,” said Rajinder Singh after the match and indeed that is how Netherlands made the draw.

After 3 penalty corner attempts in the 69th and 70th minutes, Matthijs Brouwer deflected in Taeke Taekema’s penalty corner flick to the right post to allow Netherlands to rescue a draw from the match.

I can't wait till India vs Pak match.
Us North Americans should request to dish network on showing hockey matches, or maybe one of the Indian channels.

Pakistan haar gaya

Australia 2 Korea 3

This has to be the upset of the day.

Australia lost 2-3 to Korea on the first day of the men’s Champions Trophy tournament here today.

The first half was even with both teams scoring. Nathan Eglington scored his fourth international goal for Australia in his debut match in senior international hockey. After a quick transition of the ball from right to left at the attacking quarter line, Eglington beat the slower Shin, Seok-kyo and drove past the goalkeeper (19th minute).

Korea responded with a penalty corner conversion by Yeo Woon-kon (33rd minute), flicked high into the right of goal past Leon Martin in Australia’s goal. Australia listed only one goalkeeper on its team sheet for this match to give more players time on the pitch.

Korea asserted its dominance in the second half with another penalty corner conversion by Yeo (56th minute) and a field goal by Hwang Jong-hyun (59th minute) to lead 3-1 with 20 minutes to play.

Australia failed to regroup and find purposeful penetration through Korea’s midfield in the last quarter.

Late in the match, Australia went wide to get in behind Korea’s defence and earned 2 penalty corners. Andrew Smith stepped up to flick for Australia and made one powerful shot which flew wide. Australia is looking for a penalty corner flicker in this tournament to replace the absent Troy Elder whom Australia’s coach, Barry Dancer, has asked to sit out this tournament.

Australia came back into the match in the last 5 minutes with a goal by Michael McCann to lift Australia to 2-3 and applied all the pressure on Korea in the final minutes but could not equalize.

Barry Dancer said, “We played to the game plan for the first 25 minutes of the match and it was very even for the next 40 minutes but errors in our penalty corner and attack made the difference in the result.”

Korea scored 2 penalty corners from 4 attempts and Australia failed to convert any of its 4 penalty corners.

“It was a disappointing result as we were confident we are better than Korea going into the match. We surrendered the lead with 2 goals in 3 minutes [against Australia],” Dancer said.

Korea’s coach, Kim, Young-kyn, commented, “There were too many mistakes in the first half but we did well in the second half.” Kim confirmed that Song, Seung-tae will be out for at least 2 more matches as he has a hamstring injury.

Australia play Netherlands tomorrow, Korea meet Pakistan and Germany play India.

Go Pakistan! :k:
Go Holland! :k:

Someone should teach our players how to pass. Everone thinks (At least in Indian team) that he can score the goal by himself. Used to watch Dhanraj in his early years(dont know about now) - He never showed any confidence in his team mates and hence the results.

I think, We still are the masters and our teams play classical hockey - but our players dont trust their team mates.

Today's results:
