216th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan, Tiger of Mysore

Hats off for Tiger of Mysore, Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Shahab also know as Tipu Sultan :salute: on his 216th death anniversary. I am really impressed with Tipu Sultan and his Father Haider Ali as I think they were the last rulers who fought against British Bravely.

Tipu Sultan`s heroic death - - DAWN.COM

The 211th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan, also known as the ‘Tiger of Mysore’, is observed on May 4. Much has already been written about the life, achievements and valour of Tipu. My focus, however, is on the fate of his tormentors — those who conspired and waged wars against him.

If seen on a larger canvas, the main conspirators were the British, Marathas, Nizams, various Rajas and Nawabs.

However, after the martyrdom of Tipu, we see a pattern of divine retribution against the aggressors.

To start with, legend has it that Mir Sadiq’s body was discovered lying on a heap of garbage and he had most probably been disposed of by the late Sultan’s remaining loyal troops.

The British Resident at Hyderabad, James Kirkpatrick, who had worked overtime to mastermind the unholy alliance between the British and Hyderabad, after suffering from innumerable painful diseases, died of hepatitis in Calcutta, away from his loved ones and was buried by strangers.

The ruler of Hyderabad, Nizam Ali Khan, suffered paralysis and died a miserable and unlamented death. The crafty Hyderabadi minister Mir Alam was struck with leprosy and died painfully. The Marathas fought and killed each other and burnt to ashes the town of Poonah. Jaswant Rao Holkar was reduced to the state of a mad man, ending his days chained and fed on milk. Lord Cornwallis, also died a humiliating death after suffering from dysentery.

Governor General Marquess Wellesley “almost had a nervous breakdown. He took to his bed for 10 days, unable to eat or sleep.”

In misery, Wellesley wrote to his wife, “I have been reduced to a skeleton, yellow, trembling, too weak to walk around my room. In my mind I suffer martyrdom…I am ruined here, everyone feels my degradation.” After Mysore had fallen, the British squashed their erstwhile allies, thereby fulfilling Tipu’s prophecy.

Tipu fought like a tiger, living up to his reputation. Today, Tipu proudly lies in his grave with “three sabre cuts and a bullet wound to his temple”.

His end had been an exalted one, much better than that of those who ‘thought’ they had humbled him. Whilst his tormentors have faded into oblivion, time and history have honoured and avenged the Tiger of Mysore.

I couldn’t identify why there was a twitter trend on Tipu this death anniversary. Never saw any mention even on national media in earlier years. he is still respected in India as a freedom fighter, but his religious tolerance record is controversial in his own area.

Re: 216th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan, Tiger of Mysore

Tipu is remembered more because he lost to Brits. Hyder Ali's performance record is better than Tipu's.

Secularism is new social force, medieval rulers never knew what secularism meant and use of it as moral existence of society
they were secular because they needed to be.

Re: 216th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan, Tiger of Mysore

He was not remembered because he lost to the British. Shah Alam II also lost in battle of baxer. why is he not given the same degree of respect. Tipu is remembered for is undying love for freedom. He is remembered for his bravery and courage at the time when odds were against him. and many other things.
Haider Ali was no doubt a better administrator and especially better judge of people that Tipu was not.

Re: 216th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan, Tiger of Mysore

Shah Alam II surrendered and Tipu died fighting.
Any ruler that is worth from Mysore is Hyder Ali but since he died of natural causes nobody lionized him :)

Re: 216th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan, Tiger of Mysore

I disagree. Indians, the Hindu ones, dislike him. Tipu was relatively unknown character in India until Sanjay khan made that Tv Serial “sword of tipu sultan”…But it didnt help, Indians (the hindu and sikh ones) realized that this person fought against their heroes Marathas and that he was a conservative muslim ruling over a hindu majority. So lot of mud is thrown at him, Pakistanis consider him a hero which motivates the hindus to hate him even more. And i am not farting , one has to read the comments of indians on social media and forums, they dont love him from any angle.

Re: 216th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan, Tiger of Mysore

No. Hindu ones don't dislike him, fundamentalist Hindus dislike him, they dislike anything that is not hindu same as their muslim counterpart who dislike everything non-muslim

Before TV serial and even in modern day Karnataka, Tipu was regarded highly. Rest of India wasn't knowledgeable enough where mysore is, let alone Tipu Sultan. Hindu idea of heroes is highly localized, a Bengali consider his Netaji Subhash Chandra much higher than all Marathas taken together.

Pakistanis consider him hero because he is a muslim even though he was from mysore, they don't even know who Bhagat Singh is because he was sikh and since he was an atheist-communist, even modern day Pakistanis might have lynched him.

Muslims because of their international religion have much better idea of Geography than hindus because of their local animist religion.

Re: 216th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan, Tiger of Mysore

tipu sultan is regarded highly in indian history textbooks - quite wrongly so if you ask me- people in northern kerala/malabar have suffered plenty of mysorean invasions and pretty much imposed cruel tariffs and restrictions on local farmers and traders - most of who were muslims - that made the brits look like angels. he pretty much wiped out the malabar nasranis - local christians from over a thousand years fled south to travancore. his atrocities on the locals who refused to comply is well documented by his own officers to local writers to resident europeans of kerala. subsequently he lost a war with southern kerala/travancore while attempting to raid it, thereby directly laid way for the east india company to make significant inroads there. however because he fought the brits, indian history books written by the indian nationalists have him glorified despite reality.

He was a romantic with a golden voice and great taste in women. His moves on the floor left much to be desired.
