Whats the story behind this 21 taupon ki salami given to Kings and Rajas?
Why not 20 or 25?

I think its from old Naval custom when they would fire a 21 gun volley to say that they were no longer armed. Infantry used to fire off 21 volleys as well into the air to indicate they were spending thier ammo and meant no harm.
I think over time its just become a tradition for leaders to be saluted that way in the West and then it spread around the World. Offcourse the 21 shots these days are not loaded with actuall shot but just powder. A missile or shell or bullet can still kill when fired into the air becuase the bullet comes back down sometimes with more speed.

Interesting. I read that the British fixed number of salutes for the Maharajas. The more chaaploos the Raja was, more salutes he was granted. There were only 5 Rajas out of more than 500, who got 21 taupon ki salami including Maharajas of Kashmir, Hyderabd, Gawalior, Mysore and Baroda
