The year 2011 saw a number of positive developments in Pakistan’s Information and Technology (IT) industry, from app development to global recognition and a series of awards.

HIGHLIGHTS
Pakistan Fast Growth 25
In a first for the IT industry, the Pakistan Fast Growth 25, a ranking of fast growth companies, listed 10 IT companies on its index. The Pakistan Fast Growth 25 is a program of the AllWorld Network in partnership with Harvard Business School Professor Michael Porter, launched in collaboration with JS Bank Limited.
Official Game for ICC 2011 Cricket World Cup
Local development company, Mindstorm Studios developed the official game for the ICC 2011 Cricket World Cup.The browser-based 3D game, “Cricket Power” features all 14 official teams along with players, stadiums and kits.

Pak-India ICT Firms to enhance trade up to $5b
Pakistani and Indian IT committees held bilateral talks separately on both sides of borders in March – aimed at enhancing trade ties in the field of IT. In the talks, both countries agreed to boost mutual trade in the IT sector by $5 billion through joint-ventures, investment and exchange of expertise.

Netsol deal in India
Local ICT company Netsol engaged with Indian companies to provide applications for financial services. It signed an agreement to sell its product “Netsol Financial Suite” to a global auto leasing company operating in India.
Google grants to social innovators
In another first for Pakistan, Google has granted seed money to a local association for social causes.
Google granted $250,000 to Pakistan Software Houses Association that launched Pasha Fund for distributing the amount to talented innovators. So far four individuals were selected to receive funds.

Pepper.pk mobile apps triumph
Local app developers, Pepper.pk hit the number one spot in Blackberry App World. Their application, LED Notifier Pro, has been immensely popular since its launch and ranked among the best selling Blackberry applications in the world. Additionally, their app, Photo Editor for BlackBerry has occupied the number one rank on App World twice in the past three months.

TenPearls wins Nokia contest twice
Pakistani IT firm TenPearls marked another record, beating out 800 entrants to bag second position and received a $50,000 cash prize at ‘Nokia & AT&T Innovators 2011 Contest’.
This is the second award TenPearls has received for its mobile app named “Animal 101” within a year. Their first award was first prize for their app uTrack mobile earlier in 2011 for the same platform in Pakistan.

Pakistan Shines at APICTA
Pakistan was declared the winner of two gold and five silver awards at the 11th annual Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) 2011 in Pattaya, Thailand. Pakistani firms secured two gold awards in the e-health and e-logistics and SCM categories and five silvers in the communication, financial, security, e-inclusion and e-community and e-government categories.
Pakistan’s team comprised of 18 products which competed against 162 different products from the Asia Pacific region.

Well I returned to pakistan and been here since last two years now. will be three in april and I am alive aint I ? :smiley:

Regarding op: Its only the private sector that is booming WITHOUT any government any support whatsoever. Just imagine if we get a visionary person in IT position. Sky’s the limit then! :slight_smile:

1st and foremost, I personally have nothing against anyone or whatever their reasons are to make a living outside Pakistan. Its their unprecedented right to choose to be where ever they wish to be, for themselves or their family/children. Pakistan on the other hand will insha’Allah continue to prosper and blossom without me/you, that is just my firm belief. Indeed the more the educated the more merrier and the more the rapid growth of this country.

However to speak mainly about myself. I was born and raised in Karachi. Residence has been in defence but since the age of 16 (I’m 29 and have spent 27 of those in Khi, Pak.) I’ve managed to travel all across Karachi. Be it Jauhar, Iqbal, Soldier bazar, lines area, fb area, nine zero, clifton, saddar, tariq road, north nazimabad (Pretty much all the places in khi) numerous amounts of times and often alone, be it in broad day light or the night times of midnight. I’ve even spent nights in lines area for a project I was trying to finish. (I’m a punjabi btw) During all these years (Taubah nauzubillah and may Allah swt forgive me for saying this) but I’ve never been mugged or robbed, let alone kidnapped (Though I have been asked for a 100-200rs bribe for driving a vehicle without necessary documents) and not for a single penny or paisa.

At the end of the day though, I honestly cannot provide you with the promises you seek for, nor do I believe anyone can for even Newzealand (Which last I heard was the lowest when it came to crimes) A mere experience sharing of my life is all I could’ve provided for people/citizens who probably wished to seek an update about a land that once was or continues to be, their own.

My own personal experience , 90 percent of my adult acquaintances have been robbed on gunpoint. I had gun pointed at me in one robbery. My sister and her husband got robbed two times in their own home. I was cheated by people who pretended to be honest , religious , belonged to very religious families.
I was born in Lahore lived and spent some of my childhood in Lahore and then my family moved to Karachi and spent rest of my childhood , youth and some of my adulthood there.
From crime perspective rest of the country seems to be better than Karachi at the moment.

I did read one of your detailed posts on the experiences you’ve had in Karachi, yet always wondered what area you’ve lived in.

Karachi does get most of its crime boost from mainly the Iqbal, tariqroad, jauhar side Or rather the whole of Karachi except a couple of places like Clifton, Defence, Bathisland, KDA and a few more that I cant think of atm areas. To me, my family or the people we know, Karachi has always been the 1st preferred and safest option. I could however relate to where you may be coming from, and hence keeping that in mind, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi are all quiet safe compared to Karachi.
